Western societies fell into rapid moral decline...

Western societies fell into rapid moral decline after the introduction of universal suffrage, imo.

Western societies fell into rapid moral decline after the introduction of universal suffrage, imo.

"universal sufferage" = = everyone over the age of 21 was permitted to vote for lawmakers.

IMO, society would have been better protected and served, if a system had been maintained, where lawmakers could only be elected by people who could demonstrate some interest in protecting 'the common wealth' of the broader community, from the entitlement mentality and the grasping thievery, of the common mob.

i.e.
Society would have been better protected and served, if a system had been maintained, where lawmakers could only be elected by people who held property [and, by people who had demonstrated some considerable community service].

Because, allowing a rabble to elect the lawmakers, for a society of men [and women], is folly, imo.

Dictionary;
rabble = =
1 a disorderly crowd.
2 ordinary people regarded as socially inferior or uncouth.

Because you contend, that there is nothing wrong with the path that our societies have taken, in the recent past,                ......i.e. teaching and empowering, an entitlement mentality within everyone [within every idiot who can draw breath] ?

The Universal Suffrage is not the problem; the problem is, that politicians everywhere have hijacked Democracy, and use it for their own and their cronies benefits.
Approach any politician with any problem, and he/she will just dodge the issue and tell you indirectly, don't bother me.
Another problem is, that the voters like to be told lies and not listen to any honest truth.

Grasshopper - try making your points one at a time.... I had a hard night last night and am still a little weary....old ladies falling ill.. drunken cops to deal with at the end of the night..... breath testing on the roads..... I'm weary.... sometimes I think it is time to retire....

Just lay out one item at a time.. and BTW.. the real history of the suffragettes is not something that shows any 'purity' - nice propaganda piece though.  Sad that the true nature of so many women has been shown in their avarice, near-psychopathic need for control and money at any cost, and oft-times blatant abuse of men, fired by an amazing sense of entitlement to everything they see...

Phil Collins wrote a song about that....

Grapp ler, I think Yadda's point has to do with "universal suffrage" rather than "the suffragettes", though there is obviously a strong link.

Yadda, I can't agree with you though I can go some way in that direction.
The problem with the pre-universal suffrage era was that you had even more corruption than you do now in politics.
We don't have a pre-universal suffrage history in our federal system so you have to turn to British experience to realise the difficulties. Property-based franchises saw an entrenched ruling class system. If you think we have that kind of problem you haven't seen anything. You had the so-called "rotten boroughs" which were seats held in the gift of the landed aristocracy. You had seats which were up for grabs to the highest bidder among the very small number of eligible voters.

But of course universal suffrage has brought its own problems.
Nobody with even half a brain - which excludes most of the left - can fail to recognise that there is a substantial part of the electorate which doesn't have the intellect, education or awareness to make rational voting decisions. They are led by the nose, whether it's by mainstream media, the increasingly manipulative internet or even pub talk.
But universal means universal, so that's that. And by & large it's better than some alternative.

I do however strongly believe that the voting age is too low. I just don't accept that most 18 year olds have the life experience or maturity to vote.
And I believe the pressure to lower it further, for base political purposes, needs to be strongly resisted.

Good post - I agree totally with the highlighted bit.  There are also those on the 'right' who slavishly follow a 'party' under the false perception that this will profit them just as it profits their 'party' 'betters'.... hardly the game.... which is for those at the top of the pile to prosper mightily while the rest imagine they will do well by adhering like limpets...
