This one bought from Ukraine as waste metal price is only for prototyping and experimental purpose. Next ship's design validation, aircraft launching and landing tests on moving platform are done here, also captain and crews are trained.

Next one is only 50k tons, but will be competely new designed platform and with new driving system. Electromagnetic launching system will be deployed with next version of aircrafts.

I guess the plan is to build a similar size backup ship for current one, build up technologies and experiences. The next class in 2020 will be much larger. I think by 2030, China will have a aircraft carrier fleet with minimal 5 ships.

Those will not be assigned tasks to fight with US, because with balance of nuclear heads, these traditional weapons have no use between big countries. But those can be used to put pressure on resource countries like Saudi arabia or Australia.

China has never planned to direct conflict with US, otherwise you would not see they buy 1 trillion $ US bonds. The projected goal to 2050 is to be major rule maker in east asia and west pacific area. The biggest enemy is not US but Japan on this road.
