A teenager is fighting for his life in hospital after being "coward punched" in the early hours of this morning in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley precinct.

The 18-year-old was left for dead when he was randomly struck as he walked with a friend through the Chinatown Mall about 3.35am (AEST).

It is believed the pair were on their way to catch a taxi when they were confronted by a group of four men, of Pacific Islander appearance in their early 20s.




The boy was brutally struck in the head from behind and fell and hit his head on the ground.

He was rushed to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition with life-threatening injuries. His family is at his bedside.

Police said today they believe the victim and his friend had not provoked the attack.

"This is a random act of violence, there is no indication the victim knew who the offenders were," Acting Inspector Tom Armitt told reporters.

Witnesses said the offenders then ran to a nearby car park, where they got into a vehicle and fled the scene.

Investigators are now combing through CCTV footage from the area, as they attempt to track down the attackers.

Mr Armitt said such incidents, while rare, were particularly disturbing for police.

"He was a young man who had been out for a night on the town, he hadn’t caused any issue or any concerns, he was walking through the mall with the intent to catch a cab," he said.

The attack occurred in front of a chapel in the mall, and two chaplains rushed to the victim’s assistance, rendering first aid until paramedics arrived at the scene.

Police said the actions of the pair were "heroic" and likely saved the man’s life.
