The teenage victim of an allegedly unprovoked attack by four men in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley has died in hospital.

Cole Miller, 18, was knocked unconscious on Duncan Street in Fortitude Valley about 3:35am Sunday after a night out on the town.

Police said he was struck once in the back of the head and hit the pavement, leaving him with serious injuries.

He was taken to Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in a life-threatening condition.

Police confirmed he died this afternoon.

Armstrong Renata and Daniel Maxwell, both 21, faced Brisbane Magistrates Court today charged with grievous bodily harm over the assault of Mr Miller.

The court heard Maxwell approached Mr Miller and his friend and asked them if they wanted to fight before Renata allegedly punched Mr Miller in the head.

Both were remanded in custody.

The men will have their cases mentioned again in February.

Mr Miller was a member of the Brisbane Barracudas Water Polo Club and was out with a teammate on the night he was attacked.

They were taking a break from their busy training schedule.

He was due to travel to Adelaide to compete at the national championships on Thursday.

The charges are murder now.

I give a toss.  gob was doing his best to make the attackers' name/s sound non Caucasian and anxiously grabbed the suburb's name because that suited his agenda.

Epic fail.

Having lived in a town with a large Pacific Islander community, I can say they were no more violent than the foul-mouthed white-trash falling out of pub doors after midnight.

rubbish. They are extremely violent when affected by alcohol.

they are often naturally strong, when they become violent it's bad news.

Sort like the difference between being attacked by a cocker spaniel or a bull mastiff.

Refuses?  Really?

Did the ABC issue a statement saying that they refuse to identify them as having Islander backgrounds?

Do you have a link to that statement?

Anyway, the thugs are in custody - the police know exactly who they are.

So, why then would the ABC need to mention their Islander backgrounds?

Because islanders are a crime epidemic in Australia. They have a section of their community doing violent crimes.

This does not apply to everyone - of the bullies I've encountered (verbal and physical bullies) there is one common trait. Their anger gets the better of them.

During the episode of anger they REFUSE to control themselves and physically/verbally lash out e.g. bull in China shop.

These bulls do not care about consequences and oft times end in danger to life and limb

So I love it when these bullies get their horns cut by the law and/or workplace laws

A lovely smirk their direction will rile them even more

LOVE IT!!!

I hope the law throw a whole book case at these guys

There's 'a section' in every 'community' 'doing violent crime.'

There are sections in all communities committing violent crimes.

Why is it important that the ABC only mention the backgrounds of these two people?

Islanders have a few issues in Australia. They fly in from NZ and can't get the dole or citizenship. Howard changed it. They used to be able to find easy low skilled work but that's changed  due to the economy. So they are walking around as ticking time bombs. Why does Australia let NZers fly in so easily? Why let poorly qualified islanders fly  in who are only going to end up on the wrong side of the law?

They are currently remanded in custody.

I'm pretty sure the police have identified them by now.

So, why then would the ABC need to mention their Islander backgrounds?
