"Monis had committed a number of "violent" and fraud-related offences before he fled the country "in disguise" in 1996, according to Iran's chief of police, General Ismail Ahmadi Moghaddam."

Read all about it here ...

It makes sense that you'd believe a Police chief whose service locks up political dissidents along with anyone who opposes the regime. I can't blame our authorities for not trusting the security services of that country given its deplorable human rights record. Can you?

Good to see you stand up for Monis' human rights, Armchair. You clearly support the refugee convention and Monis' entry to Australia.

No, I'm glad the bastard is dead. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but ultimately useless. Had the government known back then what he was really like would they have let him in? Of course not. But try to remember that the only info our government had to go on about Monis was from a despotic totalitarian regime that regularly kills its own people and jails the opposition parties. Surely you can understand the reluctance of our authorities to trust implicitly the info sent from Monis' home country given their woeful human rights record.

It sounds like they had an awful lot in common with the Howard Government.

Don't you think?

Government agency stamped his papers in accordance with policy and regulation ... not the government of the day.

Regardless, this kind of creeper should be shown the door immediately...... whether or  not he committed the sexual assault... nobody wants that creeping into people's sleeping quarters around here...

Sure.

But what's with the "illegal immigrant" thing?

Asylum seekers who come by boat aren't illegal immigrants.

Given the green light to enter Australia, by the Liberals.

Granted refugee status, by the Liberals.

Given Australian citizenship, by the Liberals.

Killed an innocent person, while the Liberals stood by and did nothing.

He wasn't on any watch lists. So why wouldn't Customs let him in?

are the women and children on Nauru or Manus on watch lists?

Don't know because they destroyed all their ID so we don't know who they are. You make this too easy.

Keep making it up don't you?

Monis had ID. ... it was a fake name ... how'd that work for you? Grin Grin

no .... security should be non political. Whether you liked the person giving the info or not, the security services should have checked the claims BEFORE admitting monis.

says the person who chose armchair politician as his moniker

armchair politician
A person who seems to have poorly based opinions on every aspect, defends them all blindly, and does it with very little research, IE: from just an armchair.
That kid flapping his mouth off about the war on terror is just some armchair politician.

An utterly stupid and now completely irrelevant argument. Illegal, unlawful, unauthorised - whatever.

They do not arrive lawfully so they must be detained offshore. They are not to be ever settled in Australia. When they get Cambodian or PNG citizenship they can apply for a tourist visa and if they a granted the visa they can come and visit. Otherwise they will never set foot in Australia legally.

Well, no. There is a difference between illegal and unlawful.

For people to go around claiming that asylum seekers arriving by boat are illegal it is most definitely relevant.

They do arrive lawfully though. We have specific laws in place, that we helped draft, that state that arriving by boat and seeking asylum is not illegal or unlawful and is 100% ok and fine. if we bothered to check their claims, and process their application, they could quite happily be accepted if deemed to be a refugee, and they could quite lawfully live in australia. We choose not to do this, and instead to torture them for no reason other than to deter other people seeking asylum.

The great irony is that what we do as a nation is illegal. its not the asylum seekers that are breaking the law. Its us.

Go down to Sydney or Melbourne or Brisbane International Airports and try to leave the country without a passport and see how far you get.
