Three brothers who post fake drive-by shootings, bomb threat videos, charged

Updated about 4 hours ago
Map: Melbourne 3000

Three Melbourne brothers known for posting prank videos in which they imitate terrorists by filming fake bomb stunts and drive-by shootings have been charged by Victoria Police and released on bail.
Key points:

Three brothers charged over social media clips
Brothers known for videos in which they dress up
Videos are not simple "childhood pranks", police say

The brothers, aged 20, 18 and 16, were charged with public nuisance, possessing a prohibited weapon and behaving in an offensive manner in a public place.

A 16-year-old boy was also bailed to appear at a children's court at a later date.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton expressed his condemnation over the videos in a radio interview on Thursday.

"My view on that is we will charge them on whatever they can be charged with," he told 3AW.

"What happens if there was a police officer there who witnessed that?"

"It could be a very deadly situation very quickly."

Assistant Commissioner Ross Guenther from Counter Terrorism Command said the videos were dangerous because they damaged social cohesion.

Victoria Police will ask YouTube to take the videos down.

Assistant Commissioner Guenther said there were "some challenges" in getting the videos removed as YouTube is based offshore.

Yes - I'd be furious if they did that to me.

Anyway - watch the videos before they are deleted from Youtube -

they may only last a few more hours.

Those young pranksters are very lucky they weren't killed by the cops.

Well, my wife showed me one of those videos a few weeks ago. She thought it was hilarious.  I watched it and said that some of the victims could have easily injured themselves trying to escape, or had a heart attack. I thought it was bad taste and dangerous.

She replied that I had no sense of humour.

Well, they are finally collecting their dues. Gaol might be a bit harsh, but any money they made from this venture needs to be confiscated.

Where do you draw the line?

Should these guys have been imprisoned too?

The intent was not malicious in either case, but both were irresponsible. Come on, somebody dressed as Osama Bin Laden infiltrating APEC? Making a joke of terrorism? Crossed the line by a mile.

The latest bunch of pranksters had a bigger audience than the first, which appeared on ABC. Should that be a factor?

I could actually see the funny side in both cases, but both examples were dangerous and irresponsible.

If those kids keep doing these pranks they will meet someone faster and stronger eventually.

As for the Chasers even they were surprised to get that far, I think a skit about kids with terminal conditions ended the show, a pity really it was a very funny show.
