Midwife 1-2
religious guy 1-1

Opinions?

I can't see anything good coming from the mother going to prison.

If the midwife is given home detention, she can continue with the butchering.

What about the religious  'community leader' ?

"A third offender, senior community leader Shabbir Mohammedbhai Vaziri, was found guilty of acting as an accessory after the fact by directing community members to lie to police about the practice."

Doesn't sound worthy of a prison sentence.

What these people need is education.

Couldn't peverting the course of justice be added?
I reckon anyone who holds themselves up as a religious leader then uses their position for stuff like this need to be slammed.
5 years for him

I'd give the mum 12 months
Midwife gets the max...7

Don't all people who do a crime need education? Sounds like you want these people not to go to prison Pecca? Why?

Prison is always my last preference.

Apart from people like Bryant et al, of course.

Prison plays its place in society, and some people definitely belong there.

However, I can't see it being beneficial in the case of these three people.

The old girl is sick, and the judge is confident she won't do it again (yes, I know we've heard that before).

The dude lied. I don't see that as a jailable offence.

The mother will be separated from her children. Never a good thing.

Education. That's the key.

I couldn't care less what sex, religion, or skin colour these people are. I'm looking at it objectively.

Perhaps you should try to do the same thing.

I read about this a while back. The only reason they got busted was because one of the little girls got an infection and the treating doctor reported it. These people knew that we don't do this here but they still did it. It's a dangerous backyard procedure with everlasting affects on a females sexuality and the chance of major infection. You do the crime you do the time. Old, young, black or white.

Yes. I agree with everything you've said.

And, if they are given 15 months home detention, I want to see them serve every single day of it.

As you say: do the crime, do the time.

Nobody here is asking for the sentence, or conviction, to be quashed.

[/quote]Home detention isn't a punishment. The whole punishment thing about jail is spending your day guarding your cornhole and not getting bashed. These people should really be punished for what they did. Not sitting at home watching Al Jazera.

That's merely your subjective opinion.

Millions, or even billions, would disagree with you.

The judicial system certainly does.

Okay, can we get this straight?

Was he charged and convicted for perverting the course of justice?

It's a simple 'yes' or 'no' answer.

He either was, or he wasn't.

So ... ?

Irrelevant.

He has been charged and convicted.

He now needs to serve his sentence (in prison, or at home).

If you think he should be charged with other offences, you should take your concern to the police.

For now though, let's stick with the facts as we know them.

I read earlier that Shabbir Mohammedbhai Vaziri gave his blessings for the mutilations to take place. So basically this community leader gave the green light. When he found out the cops were investigating he went around to all people involved and other members of the community and made up stories and  lies to destroy the investigation. Probably fearing for his own ass. He's a maggot.

Wow were you walking thru a room full of knobs today and slipped over and landed on a big black one ?

Isn't discussing different scenarios and outcomes of things the whole point for a place like this?

In this thread, there are two possible outcomes: home detention, or prison.

Why are you discussing additional charges?

Have the police said that they are looking at additional charges?

You seem to want to address everything else, other than the facts. Why is that?

Once again, I agree with you.

And, I agree that having done the time he should now do the time.

We agree, Homo.
