Gandalf, have you had a child through the public system?
An antenatal check up goes a bit like this.
Sit in a waiting room bursting with patients for about 2 hours and get the next OBGYN or midwife available.
It's the public system, you get what you get and you don't get upset. Cost $0.00
Actually I have. I've seen numerous pregnant women request a woman-only doctor for their checkup. Its never been a problem for the hospital we were at. Catering for this is standard - and indeed
expected hospital practice - as both the HRC and the VEO seem to agree. The only reason this became a problem is that after the woman made a perfectly reasonable and normal request, the hospital seems to have kicked up a stink (not the woman as you dishonestly infer). The only story here is that we have a hospital not moving into the 21st century.
The stand they took was because there was no female OBGYN available. If you go to a public hospital do you really expect the roster to be adjusted to requirements which have no basis in Medicine?
Should the hospital only employ female OBGYN's to make sure this situation can never occur?
Also, despite your sister's attempts to have the law changed to suit her Islamic beliefs, they were not.
The hospital has only agreed to
"give priority to requests for female-only care "
And I think that's perfectly reasonable.
When checking into the reception desk at the antenatal clinic, oh I'd prefer a female if possible. Sure, no worries or sorry, none on today.
Are you cool with that?
