Honor killings don't just happen. The murders of wives and daughters by Muslim men don't take place in a vacuum. They emerge out of a Muslim culture of violence toward women.

Here's a snapshot of what life is like for women in Muslim Bangladesh.

About 87 per cent of Bangladeshi married women are abused by their husband, this according to a nation-wide study conducted by the government that involved a sample of 12,600 women. Only 8 per cent of respondents said that they were never abused by their partner.

The CDC statistics for the US are 23.6 percent of women experiencing domestic violence. Remove minorities from the equation and the numbers drop by a lot because minority women have much higher rates of domestic abuse.

Titled Violence against Women Survey 2011, the research was conducted by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund. The picture it paints is alarming.

The survey found that domestic violence is present in most Bangladeshi households. Last year, 77 per cent of respondents admitted that they had been abused. Of these, 50 per cent had sustained serious injuries, but one in three women refused to go to hospital for fear of retaliation by the husband.

We're talking about 38 percent of married women in Bangladesh suffering serious injuries from domestic violence. Is this culture of violence again women something we really want to import into the US?

Muslim clerics teach that beating women is part of Islam. And so the attitude doesn't stay in Bangladesh. It comes along with the mosque and the Koran.
