Scab Thug Unions Ruining Australia..

Quote:
WORKERS at Melbourne’s port have turned down an average salary of $174,000, in an escalation of a dispute between a docking company and the Maritime Union of Australia.

Patrick stevedores today voted to reject an offer of a 9 per cent pay rise over four years.

The company is now threatening to launch the first lockout of its workforce since the infamous 1998 waterfront dispute.

Under the deal, workers at the East Swanson Dock who are currently being paid $159,372 would have received $174,000 by 2020.

Workers at Sydney’s Port Botany would have been paid an average wage of $186,000.

Patrick executive Alex Badenoch said the company was disappointed in the “emphatic no” delivered in a confidential ballot of staff.

If strikes continued, Ms Badenoch said a lockout of its workforce would become “a more probable measure rather than a mere possibility”.

“For the present we remain stuck in a needlessly adversarial industrial relations environment that deems it acceptable for employers and employees to butt heads to their mutual detriment over matters critical to both every few years,” she said.

“We consider it extraordinary that our people who, by any measure, are extremely well paid, not only knocked back an average annual 2.25 per cent pay rise at a time when underlying inflation is at a record low of less than 2 per cent annually.

“Our offer would have taken the average pay for a full-time employee at Port Botany to more than $180,000. This is in addition to the 5 weeks of paid annual leave and 6 rostered weeks off our permanent employees enjoy.”

Of the 827 employees who voted, around 2 per cent voted for the offer and 98 per cent against.

you could sack the lot of the greedy bastards and start all over again with a workforce on half that wage ( and benefits)

they'd be lined up for 10 blocks to get a job like that and for half the money..

These people are just exerting the fruits of capitalism. Monopoly market power.

If the Wharfies went on strike Australia would be on its knees in a week because nothing is manufactured here anymore. Commerce would come to a dead halt. The economy would wither and die quickly without imports because Australia's main  economic activity of service industry would be devastated by Australians having nothing to service each other with.
