Before logging off for the night ... I saw this thread and the most immediate thing that sprang to mind WAS education. We have a different lifestyle, it IS more casual and laid back, and a different way of 'being' in this country (Australia) it is not enough to welcome them in and leave it at that, there are boundaries and laws to all sorts of anti social behaviour which, when you have kids you are grateful for, probably didn't give it much thought while going through it ourselves.
We need targeted advertising in their 'thick' areas informing women and children of their rights and how they can be helped if they want out of their situations. For example fgm (mutilation) and perhaps they are unaware this is an illegal act. Make it law to speak these rules in every school, like the governement tried to do about smacking, and parental control. Or child marriages and arrangements trying to circumnavigate our laws, in this country it is illegal for very good reasons. You can't steal the lives of the youth in this country. Younge people here have so many more freedoms than elsewhere that migrants need to know what they can and can't get away with. We don't judge our children or spouses so harshly and certainly not to the extent that they would like to introduce to this country. It'll never happen, when it does, if it ever does, I'm out. Targeted advertising wherever they see and hear the news, it's the only way to break a cycle of forced conformity that sits like bile in the guts of decent Australians who would never entertain putting such shackles on children or women, I don't care how many converts start wearing head scarfs here. It'll never be the norm. Advertise that sharia is NOT law. That FGM is against the law. That forced arranged marriages are illegal. Give them an out, see how many integrate and move on from putrid attitudes. Don't do half arsed. Don't base funding on 'only if you do this ...' Make sure you have in place real help and alternative destinations for them to experience a better way of life out from under the shadow of controling selfish and self serving oppression. Advertise for emergency billets, I think you'd be pleasantly surprised how many people would put their hands up to help. Rubbed shoulders with a rather large group of blokes who would think nothing of rescuing women and children in this situation, would relish the chance, in fact. They just want to be heros at something, maybe this is it?
