Northern Australia Mangroves dying

Is this another portent of adverse climate change?

Mangrove dieback worries scientists

Scientists are worried about an "unprecedented" dieback of mangroves in northern Australia and the link with large-scale coral bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef.

The widespread damage to mangroves around the Gulf of Carpentaria has been highlighted at an international wetland conference held this week in Darwin.

While a detailed scientific survey has yet to be undertaken, photographs revealed hundreds of hectares of mangroves dying in two locations along both the west and east coastlines of the gulf.

Professor Norm Duke, spokesman for Australian Mangrove and Saltmarsh Network, said the scale and magnitude of the loss appears "unprecedented and deeply concerning".

Prof Duke said the damage was particularly alarming given this year's severe coral bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef, as it appeared to correlate with extreme warming events in the region.

Until more extensive research is done, the James Cook University professor isn't sure if the mangroves are beyond saving but is warning more needs to be done.

"Shoreline stability, and fisheries values, amongst other benefits of mangrove vegetation, are under threat," he said.

Prof Duke has called for increased monitoring of mangroves, particularly in the remote areas of northern Australia, so scientists can establish baseline conditions and isolate and manage any dieback.

Australia is home to seven per cent of the world's mangroves.

I know this will fall on deaf ears, but I have to say it again.

This great planet we live on has gone through several climatic changes over its life.
From Ice Ages, through to tropical environments as far north as Greenland.
these are caused by unknown factors and have had the effect of wiping out species and causing new and improved vegetation growth.

Who is to say that this is not just another of these changes?
Certainly climate scientists who cannot even predict tomorrows weather accurately wouldn't dare.

Yes we need to clean up our act, granted, but to blame everything on what we do is stretching the point just a little.
When they can predict the weather 2 weeks ahead accurately for three straight days, I might give some credibility to their Chicken little rantings.

Until then...................

Bloody mangroves are nothing but mosquito breeding grounds anyway, they should all be bulldozed and turned into marinas so that rich people have somewhere to park their yachts.

Thank you for that, I really needed to know that.

You know, as a keyboard warrior, you are really quite piss weak.
Surely you can do better than that, you could try insulting my intelligence......oh, that's right you probably didn't make it through high school, whereas I have a trade, engineering and management qualifications.

Or you could insult my world experience......Oh but your total experience is situated behind your keyboard isn't it, whereas I have been all over the world and seen many countries, met many people from many cultures.

What about my self defense capabilities, I realize that the only fighting you have done is with a toggle switch, whereas I have competed in martial arts and been a trainer for 18 years.

Seems the only chance you have is inane, pathetic insults which demonstrate you incompetence and stup1dity.

Why is it that eco-warriors such as yourself refuse to accept logical argument that perhaps, just perhaps, it might not be what we are doing that is changing the world.
Perhaps, just perhaps it is a cyclic thing (that means comes around regularly, thought I might have to dum it down for you to understand).

The continual regurgitation and aggressive tautology of eco-warriors never ceases to amaze me.
You seldom win arguments through insults, you win them with logic and facts.

Unfortunately, there are no real FACTS in the eco war, its all Chicken Little scare mongering.
But there is a plethora of insults and mantras that are rolled out every time anyone asks a question or dares to doubt the rubbish put forward as facts.

FACT
The world has been through many heating cooling cyclic events (and we were not even around at the time)
FACT
None of the scientists who pontificate about doom and gloom can accurately predict the weather even three days from now with any accuracy.
And don't give me the rubbish about there are too many contributing factors, if there are too many contributing factors for short term predictions, imagine how many there are LONG term.

Now my friend, have a little rant about something you might know about, you know, masturbation or some such, perhaps even get out in the world and get a life!!!!!
