Ending The Live Cattle Export Trade
May 28th, 2016 at 6:36pm

The Inverell Times last week reported that the Greens candidate for New England in the upcoming Federal election, Mercurius Goldstein, had said that the ‘number one thing’ the people wanted to talk to him about was supporting the livestock industry, by bringing the cattle down from the north and processing them in the New England.

“What we know is that for every 400,000 head of cattle we can bring down from the north, it’s $200 million into this regional economy. A beast that is processed here in Australia is also worth 20 percent more to the Australian economy than one shipped off-shore,” Mr Goldstein told the Times.

He said such a move would “keep Bindaree Beef strong, re-open the Gunnedah meat plant, get the Armidale meatworks up and running and get Coonabarabran back on its feet.”

“I put this to a roomful of truck drivers in Tamworth at the Road Transporter’s Forum, and they much preferred the domestic processing option over live exports,” Mr Goldstein said.

“Will Barnaby Joyce, and Tony Windsor for that matter, commit to ending the live export trade?”

Problem is, the market doesn't want processed, frozen meat. They want live cattle, to be slaughtered, fresh, according to their traditions.

Their traditions/beliefs are a crock... but "the customer is always right", eh.

If Australia was the only place in the world that had cattle ,, this cunning plan might just work.

Greens, I think that idea merits real investigation.

Good idea

I think a large number of these very poor Indonesians dont even have refrigerators so they buy their meat straight from the markets to be cooked that day.

Frozen meat is more for the supermarket situation in big cities not some tiny Indo island with sfa fridges

Because that is what is being discussed here.

Our cattle processing is hugely expensive and uncompetitive and really only supplies Australia for the most part. But if you want to stop exports, all exports of live cattle, then shut it down, they will buy there cattle form elsewhere. And we will continue to not sell our processed meat to people who can't afford it.

The last time we stopped live exports our customers started buying their live exports from Canada and Brazil.

The last time we stopped live exports it resulted in a glut of beef in the markets which reduced the price resulting in farmers taking a 25% pay cut.

What makes the idiots who want to stop live exports think another country would put its butchers and meat processors out of work by buying boxed meat over live exports.

Places we export to don't have fridges like we do, why would they buy frozen meat when they don't own a fridge.

Leftists and the Ayatollahs have a lot in common when it comes to criticism of Islam, they don't tolerate it.

They arent selling the meat to the poor Indos, they are selling it to the middle class. And it is being sold in supermarkets, just like here. Only they price it per 100 gram , not per kilo. Last time I looked it worked out at a similar price to what we pay here. Believe it or not the Indos also buy bananas from us.
