Greens call for live export ban

The Greens want Australia to phase out "cruel" live exports and expand the chilled meat industry.

The minor party says current live export regulations are a "proven failure" and it's advocating the practice be phased out and for more abattoirs to support an expanded chilled meat trade.

"The government needs to respond - not with half-baked inquiries but a comprehensive plan to stop exporting livestock for consumption and instead process the meat in Australia," Senator Lee Rhiannon said on Wednesday.

Fellow Greens senator Robert Simms said stopping live exports went hand-in-hand with creating local jobs.

"Domestic processing of livestock is worth so much more to the Australian economy per animal than live exports," he said.

Nope it's "here here".

It derives from the floor of Parliament.

"Here here, my good man".

Quote:
Hear, hear vs. here, here

Hear, hear (usually with a comma and set apart as a self-contained sentence) is the conventional spelling of the colloquial exclamation used to express approval for a speaker or sentiment. It’s essentially short for hear him, hear him or hear this, hear this, where these phrases are a sort of cheer.

Here, here is widely regarded as a misspelling, although it is a common one, and there are ways to logically justify its use. But for what it’s worth, hear, hear is the original form (the Oxford English Dictionary cites examples going back to the 17th century) and is the one listed in dictionaries. English reference books mention here, here only to note that it’s wrong.

the situation in indonesia is now monitored much better.

surprisingly for greens win (who starts many pro-palestinian threads)  the worst cases of animal cruelty were at the hands of the palestinians who performed acts including knifing the eyes and cutting the hamstrings on live cattle.

maybe the greens party can just call for the palestinians to go hungry

: AUSTRALIAN live exporters are “extremely concerned” about the serious nature of fresh allegations of cruelty towards Australian cattle in Gaza, from leaking supply chains in Israel.

Animals Australia says it has made 10 complaints to federal regulators about breaches of the Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System (ESCAS) involving the two countries since last November.

Israel is a significant Australian live cattle destination, with almost 100,000 head exported in 2013, valued at $72.8 million, according to MLA statistics.

But exports to Gaza stopped last year when Livestock Shipping Services voluntarily halted trade as a result of animal cruelty allegations.

Animals Australia spokesperson Lisa Chalk said the 10 complaints relating to ESCAS breaches in Gaza had been lodged with the Department of Agriculture and the two most recent two complaints involved the transfer of more than 1000 cattle from Israel to Gaza, in contravention of a government order.

She said Animals Australia first reported evidence of “horrific abuse” of Australian cattle both in the approved and non-approved abattoirs in Gaza last November.

But since that time, seven further complaints have been made, supported by graphic vision of “shocking slaughter practices, including the stabbing of eyes and slashing of leg tendons.

Ms Chalk said Animals Australia had also presented evidence of Australian cattle being held in Gaza in numerous premises outside of ESCAS-approved supply chains.

“Over the past fortnight, Animals Australia has lodged two further complaints based on information from Israeli and Palestinian sources that over 1000 Australian cattle have been transferred from Israel into Gaza in breach of the Departmental order and ESCAS regulations,” she said.

Herb , it is nearly impossible to run an abbatoir in the kimberley or the gulf.
Where would you get the tradespeople , refridgeration mechanics, hyraulics engineers, how are you going to store the meat frozen and transport this to overseas countries which may not even have a cold chain in place.
Cattle really arent worth enough to transport long distances for slaughter in australia.
many of the cattle in the north are not that valuable, skinny beasts and are fattened up during transport , increasing their value

Goldstein, had said that the ‘number one thing’ the people wanted to talk to him about was supporting the livestock industry, by bringing the cattle down from the north and processing them in the New England.

“What we know is that for every 400,000 head of cattle we can bring down from the north, it’s $200 million into this regional economy. A beast that is processed here in Australia is also worth 20 percent more to the Australian economy than one shipped off-shore,” Mr Goldstein told the Times.

He said such a move would “keep Bindaree Beef strong, re-open the Gunnedah meat plant, get the Armidale meatworks up and running and get Coonabarabran back on its feet.”

“I put this to a roomful of truck drivers in Tamworth at the Road Transporter’s Forum, and they much preferred the domestic processing option over live exports,” Mr Goldstein said.

“Will Barnaby Joyce, and Tony Windsor for that matter, commit to ending the live export trade?”

during the drought last year, you could buy north qld cattle for $50 a head. now how much does it cost to send one from the kimberley to new england by road train.

good grief.

the greens misunderstanding of this industry is appalling .

Greens are fairy land dreamers!

What's so amazing
That keeps us stargazing
And what do we think we might see
Someday we'll find it
The rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers, and me

AMIEU condemn Barnaby’s ‘support for live export expansion’

By Beef Central, 27 May 2016

Meatworkers have condemned comments attributed to agriculture minister Barnaby Joyce suggesting he plans to ‘do everything in his power’ to expand live cattle export opportunities out of Australia, saying the decision would jeopardise 600 processing jobs in Townsville, alone.

This is one of the few ideas the Greens have I can actually agree with.
I don't believe in live export of animals.  Might put a dent in the beef trade but so be it... Abbatoirs, freezers etc...  but no live trade.
They can keep our cattle and breed from them and eventually we will do ourselves out of business anyway.

There is a famous saying about society & it's weakest & animals.

That it seems a great number of people(or a few influential) are prepared to ignore great cruelty & suffering for few bags of silver speaks volumes.

Get real!  WE export livestock to countries (Muslim) who have "religious" beliefs about how they slaughter animals. Do you want our primary producers to go broke because of the Greens?

Nobody is obsessing over you ... you are just being a total jerk.  Get with the program.

This is the biggest lie of the Industry. Those citizens with no refrigeration do not eat Australian cattle, they still exist on their traditional diets based mainly on rice, vegetables & a very small amount of protein usually chicken or fish.
Those that eat Australian beef are the city based, western wannabe's, plenty of cold train there.

What else do you consider unworthy.
Pathetic attitude from someone who likes to lecture us on animal husbandry.
