Islam certainly plays a part, as does Christianity and any other homophobic organisation (or person) that continues to demonise people attracted to the same sex.

This guy's Islamic family would have disowned him (or worse) if they found out he was gay, so he tried to convince them that he wasn't in the most definitive way he could think of.

The homophobic teachings of Islam made him feel embarrassed, confused, and conflicted.

There are many contributing factors in this sad story, and Islam is just one of them.

Gun laws, homophobia, radicalisation, his father, and mental illness all played a part too.
