swear word filter
Jun 18th, 2016 at 10:44am

Please note that FD himself suggested I post this here - I was happy to keep it between us. But sure, I'll let my views be known here...

I think the whole idea is utterly absurd and should be scrapped altogether. Especially for a board that was specifically set up in the interests of free speech. Personally I like indulging in a few expletives to emphasise my arguments, and I don't believe it detracts from the quality of my arguments. But does it even dissuade people from swearing? Of course not, everyone just finds ways of spelling it differently to avoid the filter. Besides, when you see the word 'smacking' or whatever euphemisms are used, obviously everyone knows what word it is really - thus one way or another, swearing is not avoided anyway.

So for feerks sake, lets stop this shIIt and get rid of this stupid, moronic faarking filter!

Poll added.

I removed some of the words from the swear word filter a few weeks back.  There's only about half a dozen in there now.

Leave the C word there.

No need to use that I reckon!

In my opinion, everything has limits, including WHAT & HOW we say.

If the current limits in place on this site are relaxed any further, then this site will go down a similar road to FD's other site, that being PA, Which frankly leaves a lot to be desired!

However, this is FD's site, so if he wants this site to go down the same path as PA, then that's his decision.

That said, I will not entertain going any further down that path, whatsoever!

I voted 'Keep it' for that exact reason.  You give some people an inch, they will take a mile as you have seen with my 'imposter.'  I'd toughen it up to make a clear statement of zero tolerance towards going down a primrose path to the almost empty but open fetid sewer that other place is.

get rid of it. There isn't one word on there that people can't find ways around if they choose to.

I think some words should be out of bounds.
Rednecks C word suggestion being right, but otherwise I don't think it's needed.
This isn't a kids site.

Sure...but kids can access it.

And if you reckon you have had enough of complaints about conduct here under the current Rules, expect an avalanche if you give people, like one I don't need to name, an inch.

Further, the place will empty out, believe me.  There are other sites Mr Hicks where no-one is subjected to crap as you propose.

I agree with both of you. Surrender to the lowest common denominator is never a good option.

That sums it up for me.

However, the use of foul language should be restrained to a bare minimum and not used with rampant profligacy.

If for no other reason than that ladies are present.   Roll Eyes

I am not voting. I will abide by any ruling, but I find the present policy ironic. F88K is banned, but bugger is perfectly acceptable. Reminds me of the time I heard a suburban grandmother admonishing an innocent little girl I would guess her own flesh and blood, "You little bugger." She also called the child "Bugger Lugs." You wonder why Australians grow up with such foul mouths? Its because they don't think about what they are saying.

For Marla to reach her unbridled full stride she needs all of those colourful Anglo-Saxon words. It's the least we can do for her as a regular ranter here.

n***** is banned, and there is a reasonable justification for that - racist white supremists might go googling for that very term, and then start running rampant on the forums they find where people are talking about it. You certainly wouldn't want your forum to become a magnet for such people. And yet, funnily enough Abo, boong and coon aren't banned - even though IMO they are just as offensive.
