Here are a few other good Aussie ones for you to use at University to confuse your matesSilly as an arse full of Smarties
http://blogs.theage.com.au/lifestyle/allmenareliars/archives/2007/05/silly_as_an... If you've been a regular reader of this humble blog, you'll know I'm a big fan of slang and have been doing my part to stir the coals of our language; bringing you new and also sometimes forgotten terms such as brasco (toilet), snot (fight), tap (have sex with), spade (chat-up), munted (under the influence of drugs or alcohol) and stroppy (ill-tempered or belligerent).
A while ago I got around to seeing the film Kenny, and if you've also caught it, you'll know one of the great joys of the movie is the title character's exacting use of slang, including my personal favourite, "silly as an arse full of Smarties."
Australians have no monopoly on slang - the Americans, French, English, Irish and Scots have more ridiculous turns of phrase than you can poke a burnt stick at - but we do have a certain understated skill (and obsession with orifices) that has given us such gems as "fits like a thumb in a bum" and "busier than a blue-arse fly" and "like sh---ing out a rocking chair".
Today, I'd like to share with you a couple of my favourite Australian expressions in the hope you'll add some of your own ...
Blow a dog off a chain (windy).
Ugly as a hat full of arseholes/jar full of monkey's arseholes (extremely unattractive).
Rough as hessian underpants (unattractive or tastes bad).
Head like a smashed crab/dropped pie/slapped arse/chewed Mintie/burnt thong/sucked mango/mile of unpaved road/bashed in sh-- tin (unattractive).
Beat you like a red headed step child (a friendly challenge).
Busier than a blue-arsed fly/cat burying sh-- (a lot to do).
Turn on you like a ballerina in a jewellery box (untrustworthy).
Scarce as rocking horse sh-- (rare).
Come a gutser (have an accident/make a mistake).
Like shitting out a rocking chair (problematic, exhausting or painful).
Off like a bride's nightie (to leave quickly).
Fits like a bum in a bucket/thumb in a bum (a good match, tight fit).
Full as two Mudgee mailbags/a private school hat rack/a public school/a fat man's undies/fairy's phonebook/a goog (replete).
Silly as an arse full of Smarties/two bob watch (stupid or crazy).
Awning over a toy shop (a beer gut).
Flash as a rat with a gold tooth/journo with a gold pen (dressed up).
There's thousands more out there, some better known than others, so feel free to share and try to keep it clean, gentle readers.
What's your favourite Aussie saying?
