Part of the festering sore that is US gun culture, is Hollywood, which has been glorifying the use of firearms since 1900. Right up until the 1960s, they did this by not showing any bloody wounds, or brains hanging out. But once society got a taste for it, Hollywood couldn't dish the stuff out quick enough. And don't we Australians love watching American shoot each other on TV? We are all "Holier than thou," watching news, but lets face it, we love seeing gun-play, or we wouldn't buy the stuff.

Its interesting that Hollywood will vote for Obama on many social issues including the war in Iraq, but are they going to tone down the gun-play in totally fictitious movies? Not while it sells. Of course, the screen writers and directors claim they are merely interpreting real life. That may be so, but they can't deny they helped, in a big part, to create contemporary American gun culture.

There claim to present social comment or reality is rather hollow. Anyone who is trained in the use of firearms has to be appalled at what Hollywood has even the good guys doing. First of all, you do not level a firearm (loaded or not) at any living thing unless you intend to shoot. Threatening people with the muzzle of a loaded gun is not a reasonable way to settle a dispute, but it is a good way to get yourself disarmed and maybe killed.
One good rule of thumb is not to let the enemy know you are armed until you fire.

But here is an example of Hollywood at its most stupid with firearms. Kevin Costner in Dances with Wolves is looking for a buried cache of fireams on the Praire, but heavy rain falls. He rides around with a rifle in one hand (stupid) and the reins in the other. When he thinks he has found the spot, he throws the Henry rifle, his only defense, down into the mud and jumps down from the horse. Well I guess the rifle would shoot round corners after that.

he obviously hasnt thought it through. The ENTIRE PROBLEM is that every mand and his dog (and 4yo child) has a gun. So many people carry guns that a massacre is a weekly occurence.

I have no sympathy for the cops who shot so stupidly, but at the same time, they are facing an armed populace. Stupid, tragic events are always going to happen when everyone - EVERYONE - has guns.

And yeas, disarm the populace at least to the extent of making it illegal to carry (concealed or otherwise) in a public place.

It might be worth considering this:

There’s no national police force in the US, where policing is organised on a state and local basis. The country has around 500,000 police officers and a total of 40,000 separate police forces, over half of which are simply one or two-man sheriffs’ offices in small towns.

If anything American cops need to be better armed. American cops need to become soldiers. It's that bad. Paramilitary.

You have to be careful judging this instance from 50 seconds of footage when this  instance  probably went for 20 minutes. One thing these videos never show is these black men being non compliant. Do what the cops say- easy!!

Ending the drug war would be huge for the US police/civilian relationship. 

If somebody knows they're going to prison - possibly for a very long time - if they get caught with a bud in their pocket, they're going to be extra edgy around police, and police are going to be extra edgy around them.

Apparently the US prison guards union are one of the main lobby groups for keeping marijuana illegal.  They have the greatest incarceration rate in the world and the prison guards union are still drumming up business.   

The training of  U.S. Police in Firearms and the use therof needs to be radically overhauled.

So too, the mental fitness of many who wear the Police Uniform do not have the mental capacity to deal with dangerous situations or situations which because of their 'cowboy tactics' escalate into dangerous situations.

The U.S. Police do have a lot to contend with because of the huge number of firearms freely available in the community.

I feel really sorry for the average hard working cop who has to go out and face many of the community who do have guns and are as crazy as loons.

However it is blatantly obvious that a sh..tload of discipline and training needs to be mandatory for any Police Officer serving in America. It is obviously a low priority in many Police Departments.

that's because the majority of the prisons in the US are privately run for profit. More prisoners means more profit.

Your argument remains utterly stupid. being armed DOES as a rule prevent them from being shot. 'as a rule' does not imply 100% of the time anymore than wearing a seat belt stops you from being killed in a car accident. But 'as a rule' they do.

There would be more to this than simply cop shooting someone for no reason. I think the officer might have seen something deemed threatening (and I don't mean "a black guy") and took a shot. His "I don't know response" might have been part of a sardonic quip. Like, "why do YOU think I shot you?". I will be interested for an explanantion from both sides.
