Trump & the blue collar vote
Aug 21st, 2016 at 12:03pm

WEIRTON, W.Va. — The Ohio Valley is filled with registered Democrats, the kind that hung portraits of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman and John F. Kennedy on their living room walls. It is made of coal and steel towns and union workers, and stretches from the Pittsburgh exurbs across West Virginia’s panhandle into Ohio.

But here in Weirton — where Weirton Steel Company employed 12,000 people and now only 900 — many say they will cast their ballots for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. They talk about him over beers at local taverns and at church socials. For many of those in the unions, he’s the first Republican for whom they’ll vote — even as national unions, including the United Steelworkers and the AFL-CIO, have endorsed Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

“When the steel industry was going good and the coal was good, it was blue,” said George Psaros, 76, a retired Weirton Steel engineer who voted for President Obama in 2008 and 2012 and is undecided in this contest. “Well, the world has changed.”

Ever since Democrats like Bill Clinton embraced free trade, West Virginia has voted for the Republican presidential nominee in greater margins. West Virginians sided with Democrat Michael Dukakis instead of George H. W. Bush in 1988, only one of 10 states to vote blue. But by 2000, George W. Bush won the state by 6 percent of the vote, and in 2012, Mitt Romney won by more than 20 percent.

Now even one of the most reliably Democratic groups — union members — may be turning red, drawn by Trump’s free-trade bashing and resentful of Clinton’s past support for certain international trade agreements.“I don’t know what Trump would do if he’s elected,” said Mark Glyptis, president of the United Steelworkers Local 2911 and a Trump supporter, who voted for Obama in the past two elections. “But I know what Hillary would do.”

If Trump wants to flip the electoral map and win in November, this may be his most promising strategy. His critique of trade deals may not only help him win Weirton and the rest of West Virginia, but also other, more critical industrial belt states such as Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Nationally, union households have increasingly voted for conservative candidates, data show. In 1996, only 30 percent of union households voted for Republican candidates. In 2012, that increased to 40 percent, and political analysts expect that rise this election cycle.
Trump appears to be accelerating that schism between unions and Democrats, especially in pockets of the country where blue-collar manufacturing jobs once drove local economies.

[Trump's anti-trade rhetoric rattles unions]

“What we’re seeing is not surprising, but what is surprising is that we’re seeing Trump accelerating that rift,” said Robert Rupp, professor of history and political science at West Virginia Wesleyan College. “As we’re watching Trump disintegrate, [union members] are the one solid group that will stick by him until November because his economic and populist message resonated. And it’s not just in West Virginia and it’s thought the industrial states.”

And increasingly, these distressed workers are associating free trade with the Democrats. In Glyptis’s office hangs a poster that says “Free Traders are Traitors.” To many this election season, that means Democrats.
“If you’re working in a state with a tangible part of its economy in manufacturing, you’re going to be pretty concerned about Hillary Clinton and especially a Democratic Senate,” said Joel Kotkin, a presidential fellow at Chapman University in Southern California.

Trump this month in Detroit reinforced his bid to win over blue-collar voters by proclaiming: “Americanism, not globalism, will be our new credo.”

“American steel will send new skyscrapers soaring,” he said in an economic address in Detroit. “We will put new American metal into the spine of this nation. It will be American hands that rebuild this country, and it will be American energy — mined from American sources — that powers this country. It will be American workers who are hired to do the job.”

[Finally, some good news for blue-collar workers]

Some people in this part of West Virginia said in interviews they are angry about their community’s condition and blame the Democratic Party, which for generations has called itself “of the working class.” At the heart of that discontent is economic disillusionment and a feeling that Washington Democrats have sacrificed their well-being to push through more international agreements.

That is very significant.

Trumps a business man.
The best thing for the 'business called America' is if there is plenty of jobs.

Hillarys a politician.
She is corrupt and in many peoples pockets, her 'deals' have harmed the 'business called America'.

More Boey "my dick is soooooooooo white I need to wave it in the wind" posting.

Not one word of his own opinion which is typical of white dick wind waving people.

Hey, white dick in the wind waver, Trump has ALWAYS spoken the the ruling class and only gives a poo about their economic and political system (as well as the growth of social opposition) and he has made it crystal clear he would have zero trouble preparing a more authoritarian and violent methods of rule than Obama ever could.

Get the bugger out of here, Boey.

When the far left start getting angry, nasty & personal it can only mean the polls are turning for Trump.
But there will always be people who don't want their country to be great again.

Wow, just wow. Spoken like a true Breitbart automaton puppet.  Ironic, too since  Breitbart "news" is nothing more than a angry, right-wing gutter poo posturing itself off as actual press who promote some of the foulest, nationalistic, militaristic, and fascistic politics EVER! Cheesy

Grow up, Boey. Work on getting a life of your own.

And when da bugger was America ever "great"

When the flag flew under the age of slavery and/or genocide?

And I guess it is really getting up your nose that the Breitbart crew are now doing a great job for Trump.
I mean, there shouldnt be any voices raised against Clinton should there . . .that would be totally unfair.

Breitbart is pseudo-news organization - like Fox only with more misogyny and racism.

Boey will be all right. He's just lonely and Trump gives him sort sort of voice - like all those who support him here.  However, him and Sprinty should quit acting like complete jerks when people disagree with them when they make post after post from the likes of Breitbart who are not even a news organization at all but rather a Goebbels-eqsue propaganda site who make all sorts of poo up for advertising dollars from their lame click bait tactics.

Why would blue collar guys be voting Republican anyway? Trump's the essence of elitism. Military school, daddy's business, and a career as a property developer. Trump has promoted pro-business policies for years - in between his own self-promoting stunts: lavish weddings, casino openings, appearances on Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.

Blue collar voters are deluded if they think Trump's there for them. Trump is there for himself. His pitch at the presidency was only ever intended as leverage to get his job back at NBC. As he's said many times: the White House is a dump. It only has two stories.

Trump doesn't want to be president. He wants his own talk show. He wants to bask in the limelight and talk about himself. This is what he does.

If America is mad enough to vote him in, he won't last 5 minutes as president.

Hilary has a track record of working in government. Of course you'd want a president who has dealt with the bureaucracy, the unions, the lobbies and most importantly, the congress and the senate. Hilary has seen the office of president first-hand. She knows its limitations and how it works. Hilary cut her political teeth on health care reform when her husband was president. Hilary was in the governor's mansion in Arkansas when Trump was in his first marriage. She has a lifetime of political skills and knowledge.

Hilary's track record in political office out-trumps Trump's. There is simply no comparison. If anything, Hilary's track record is an albatross hanging around her neck.

Deluded? Not any more. Like the silent majority right throughout western democracies - not only white - , they've had it up to the eyeballs with pseudo-socialist, globalist claptrap that has taken away their occupations and their chance to provide for their families in the future.
And come November there are enough of them to propel Trump to the Oval Office and similar figures into office elsewhere.

The tsunami is rising at this moment.

Pseudo socialist? The US has had neoliberal Regan policies for two generations. All that globalist claptrap is set up to benefit the US.

If American blue collar workers truly believe they've been laboring under pseudo-socialist policies, they clearly are deluded. The very global financial crisis that lost them their jobs and their homes was the result of the financial markets regulating themselves.

Trump himself is campaigning on pseudo-socialist policies. His economic "solutions" include printing more US dollars, reintroducing tariffs, and declaring a trade war on China.

None of these, of course, will happen. The president, for example, doesn't run the mint. Not only does Trump not understand economic policy, he doesn't understand the powers of executive office.

Regardless of this, Trump is just a distraction. He'll never become president. But voters should at least get their distractions right. Are they for pseudo-socialist policies, or against them?

Thanks, Marla, but I'll have to watch it a couple of more times before 'The Message' sinks in. WHY do you young American girls/women talk so fast?

Slow down ... there's plenty of time ... be cool ... talk at your OWN pace. You're like goddamned chipmunks.

Measure your speech so it flows in a relaxed and non-squeaky way. And that's another thing: You girls talk from your upper-frame rather than from your diaphragm, with the result that your voices have absolutely no timbre or depth, and so they sound sharp and squeaky - like chalk across an old style blackboard.

Practice breathing exercises and 'vocalising' in such a way as to give your voice more 'authority', resonance, and 'character'.

Best of luck.

Down in Texas they don't take to girls with squeaky voices.

Lotus position ... and then say "mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm" while trying to deepen your voice. Within a couple of months you'll find you'll be getting admiring glances from the Right Kind of White Men in your locality - professional people who can take you out of your black and Hispanic ghetto neighbourhoooood.

On the campaign trail, Donald J. Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, has sold himself as a businessman who has made billions of dollars and is beholden to no one.

But an investigation by The New York Times into the financial maze of Mr. Trump’s real estate holdings in the United States reveals that companies he owns have at least $650 million in debt — twice the amount than can be gleaned from public filings he has made as part of his bid for the White House. The Times’s inquiry also found that Mr. Trump’s fortunes depend deeply on a wide array of financial backers, including one he has cited in attacks during his campaign.

Trump is the first candidate for president who has refused to hand over his tax return.

There can be only one reason for this: Trump doesn't want Americans seeing how he gets out of paying tax.

Waving Trump and Clinton flags in Australia, is an exercise in futility. To be successful, the candidate needs to be the most conniving in the field. Both T and C have credentials in that department, and all their moralising is transparent to anyone with half a brain.

I believe there has been a co ordinated attempt to make Trump seem down in the polls when in reality there is a huge groundswell of support for him

Polls are polls, it doesn't matter what concerted attempts you make.

The usual explanation that Brexit happened despite the polls is mistaken. The polls said Brexit was 50/50, and the result backed them up.

Trump's groundswell of support is largely noise. The media capitalizes on this because it sells: Trump rates.

Because of this, Trump will be rewarded when he loses the campaign and he'll get just what he's after: a good TV deal. Let's face it, this is what Trump's been after all along. The last thing Trump wants is 4 years hard work in the White House.

Trump is not a politician, he's a celebrity. The fact that there's a groundswell of support for Trump shows just how fickle people have become.
