Will Russia get a new Tsar?
Oct 1st, 2016 at 3:11pm

Putin has been keen to resurrect a lot of Russia's imperial past & glory. Part of this has been the repossession of Russia's imperial territories like the Crimea and part of Ukraine, but is he turning his mind to a settled disposition of power?

Lately, with his blessing, the murdered Romanovs have been restored to a position akin to saintliness in the Russian Orthodox Church. No longer is the soviet language of "Oppressors of the People" used.
The place in history of several of the Tsars, notably Peter the Great and Catherine the Great, have also been brought back to prominence.

At the same time, there has been a reappraisal of Stalin as a war leader and promoter of industrialisation. He is no longer someone whose name is not to be mentioned. This has been more of a popular movement by the people rather than something decided by Moscow however. Putin would not want to pursue and maintain power in the same way Stalin did.

Russia has always wanted a strong father-figure as leader. The Tsar was "the little father" of his people.

Is it possible Putin wants to see the Russian leadership returned to a permanent arrangement such as a ruling dynasty provides. He is already in place till I think about 2024, but this has required fairly artificial transfers of power.

Know the enemies of a civil society by their public behaviour, by their fraudulent claim to be liberal-progressive, by their propensity to lie and, above all, by their attachment to authoritarianism.
