Cheques

A little trip down memory lane.

Do you remember, in the days when banks had local branches and those branches had managers and the managers were prominent people in local communities, it was like a rite of passage when you first got a chequebook.

And the other thing was, cheques were a fairly acceptable form of payment back then, as long as you had ID. And you pulled out your chequebook and slapped it down as if to say "how much do you want, whatever it is I'm good for it".

I found my cheque book in a drawer today. The last cheque I wrote was in 2014. I wrote two cheques in that year and none since.

It's like the passing of the age of steam.

Know the enemies of a civil society by their public behaviour, by their fraudulent claim to be liberal-progressive, by their propensity to lie and, above all, by their attachment to authoritarianism.

I still use them to transact most if not all Taxi business payments.

I've been doing my financial business ONLINE since about 2000. Bills are sent to me via email, I pay via BPay.

The last time I had to deposit a cheque was when I received an inheritance from an Uncle. Sent to me via Registered Mail. Why they didn't just ask me for my Bank details and do a transfer, who knows.  It was a substantial amount too.

Uncle's name was 'John'?

No, not that it is any of your beeswax, his name was Victor and he was 96 when he died and had no children. Thus I was a beneficiary, as were my sisters.

Bullshit.  When I won lotto they deposited it into MY "special" account ( so that the ATO couldn't trace it).  Don't lie, Redneck.

Oh yes, you are showing your age if you remember banks closing at 3PM. No ATMs. Or that you had to were a suit and get a hair cut if you wanted to talk to person above the tellers. And then there was that quaint Australian custom of circulating a cheque, as if it was money, if it was made out to the bearer.

I think the last cheque I wrote, was at least ten years ago.
