If Ms Ley had said she used the opportunity to finalise a purchase on an investment property whilst she was on official business in Queensland, where is the problem.

she didn't say it was an opportunity to finalise a purchase, she said she was in Brisbane on business and while there went to the Gold Coast to buy a $700 000 property the unit on a whim.

the argument is that she 'created' the business so as to justify charging taxpayers for her trip to buy the property.

If she is telling the truth she'll have no problem releasing her diary.

Here's the problem. Travel entitlements are made to be rorted.

Fly up to the Goldy, do 30 mins and one second of work then, oh, golly gosh, what will I do with the rest of the day, hey kids, Sea world, Dream World, Movie World? Weeeeeee. Not premeditated, no problem.

Ley effed up because she did something that could be called premeditated personal business. In reality, there's no difference to what she did and what they all do on just about every single trip that's not the standard Canberra commute.

Ummmmm. They still finance their purchases but they have a banker on speed dial.

calling your banker while at an auction is not a banker on speed dial, its pre arranged. Bankers still have forms to fill out and signatures to acquire ... her banker is in NSW, auction in QLD

ohh, interesting fact, the person she bought the house from had previously donated $50k to the liberal party that year

impulse buy my arse.

I'm not making a judgment about her particular situation,  I'm just saying people with a lot of juice who know their financial situation do buy on impulse and getting finance later is just phone call. I've done it myself. $700k is not that big a deal.

My neighbors bought an investment property on impulse when driving past a house being auctioned that day.

Despite what politicians claim, the family reunion scheme seems to be little more than a perk used to hitch a taxpayer-funded family holiday to parliamentary work in places many Australians can only dream of visiting for a break.

No MP ever seems to use the family reunion entitlement during a visit to a disadvantaged remote Aboriginal community or a fact-finding mission to a town on its knees as its manufacturing base collapses.

If it doesn't meet community expectations then be prepared to be lambasted over it.  That's what happened with Bishop's choppergate.

Yes quite right. The luxury apartment purchase wasn't planned before the trip. It just happened to also be an impulse buy during the trip.  Trip would have happened regardless.  However, it does not pass the so called "Hockey pub sniff test".  As hideous as the choppergate.  Ofc, since this is a lib we are talking about, they are entitled regardless.

Purely coincidental that the property belonged to a lib donor and known acquaintance ofc.

Yes well just another outpouring of ALP propaganda by a Prog.
