January 26 is not Australia Day. If anything it should be called First Fleet Day.
January 1 is Australia Day. It is the day we became one nation, however being New Year's Day it's a poor choice for Australia Day.
Raven agrees with miketrees, May 27 is a good day to celebrate Australia Day as that is the date the Federal Government was able to govern all Australians.
They were already "governing" all Australians.
Except that some of it's citizens didn't have the right to vote & were considered as wards of the state.
Incorrect, Aboriginal people were given the vote in 1962.
What the referendum did was amend s51.
Originally s51 (xxvi) read: The Parliament shall, subject to this Constitution, have power to make laws for the peace, order, and good government of the Commonwealth with respect to: The people of any race, other than the aboriginal race in any State, for whom it is deemed necessary to make special law.
The referendum deleted "other than the aboriginal race in any state," thus allowing the federal government to make laws for aboriginal people.
s127 was deleted entirely.
