- So true. People are so insular nowadays. All the houses around here have their opaque curtains drawn tight, or their window-shutters bolted 24/7, and nobody knows who their neighbours are any more.

And it's not just me. I'm old enough to remember when neighbours on a suburban street would call out to one another, and there was a community feeling about the place - but those days are long gone.
