ATO Deputy Commissioner Michael Cranston to be charged in relation to $165m fraud syndicate allegedly involving son

VIDEO: Police smash tax fraud syndicate

ATO Deputy Commissioner Michael Cranston will be charged over a major tax fraud allegedly involving his son.

Mr Cranston has been issued with a court attendance notice for allegedly publicly abusing his position as a public officer in a senior official of the Commonwealth, the AFP said today.

Mr Cranston's 30-year-old son Adam and eight other people have been arrested over the $165 million tax fraud investigation.

The arrests were made following an eight-month investigation, codenamed Operation Elbrus, with assistance from ATO, Australian Federal Police (AFP) said on Thursday.

"The scale of this allege fraud is unprecedented for the AFP," said Australian Federal Police Deputy Commissioner Operations Leanne Close on Thursday.

Adam Cranston was arrested yesterday in one of 28 police raids across Sydney, Wollongong and the Southern Highlands.

A number of items have also been seized as part of the investigation, including an orange and blue Ford GT owned by Adam Cranston.

Authorities allege a Sydney financial service organisation co-chaired and managed by Adam Cranston, SYNAP, played a key part in the scheme.

Police will allege SYNAP siphoned wage payments through “second tier” companies in avoid paying full income tax.

The remaining tax – alleged to total more than $165 million – was then divvied up among syndicate members, police will claim.

Adam Cranston is expected to face Central Local Court today.

Must be a liberal supporter. That's the only way they can succeed in life.

Suppose it's unfair to mention the NSW Laborite Eddie O. and the coal.

Why not mention Macdonald, Sinodinos and Joyce as well? They're all corrupt.

This is why we need a independent Federal anti-corruption commission. Who knows how much more corruption is out there waiting to be uncovered?

100% agree.  These fat cats at the top hound the little guys over SFA on tax issues, yet you can guarantee that at the top....there will be serious crap happening.

Cranston Snr is in one of the most powerful positions in Australian with policy control over the lives of the mere minions....yet there he is......seemingly innocently (allegedly) passing info to his son and daughter.

Did it never cross his mind to ask where/how they managed to acquire all that 'bling'

Nah.
