There's been a big upswing in gun violence in SW Sydney.
No prizes for guessing who the usual suspects are.
Man repeatedly shot near children playing soccer in Villawood The Express Man shot in legs just metres from where the Bankstown Berries juniors were training in Villawood Danielle Buckley, Canterbury-Bankstown Express June 15, 2017 5:00pm Man stabbed 'over cigarette' THE shooting of a man in a “targeted attack” in Villawood was witnessed by children as young as six who were just metres away at soccer training.
The children who witnessed the man shot multiple times in the legs have been left traumatised, the local Labor MP says.
Imran Athar Khan, 20, is recovering in hospital from multiple bullet wounds to his legs after a gunman opened fire at Thurman Park in Villawood on Wednesday night.
A hooded gunman shot Mr Khan in a street about 20 metres away from the sports field and then sped off in a dark-coloured station wagon.
The man is taken to hospital by paramedics after being shot several times in his leg near soccer training in Thurina Park, Villawood. Picture: Oceania Productions The shooting happened about 6pm as the Bankstown Berries practised at the Lowana Street park.
Local member for Bankstown Tania Mihailuk joined opposition police spokesman Guy Zangari at the entrance to the park on Thursday, saying gun crime had become too prevalent.
“Families ended up being in lock down; they had to stay back and provide statements to the police,” Ms Mihailuk told reporters.
“Children were completely distressed, petrified, crying. It’s just unbelievable that this could happen in a suburban area like Villawood.”
Mr Zangari said the NSW Government needed to take action to ensure the community’s safety.
“This is the second shooting 24 hours and the third shooting in seven days,” Mr Zangari said.
“These brazen shootings are an indication that gangs know the NSW Government is ineffective when it comes to managing gun violence throughout the state.
A resident on Lowana Street told AAP he heard the sirens.
“It was just lucky one of the kids didn’t get killed,” said the man who didn’t want to be named.
He said the field, which backs onto Villawood East Public School, was often full of children and the suburb was usually quiet and peaceful.
Police investigate the scene and speak to witnesses. Picture: Oceania Productions Bill Glotsis, from Bankstown Berries, said parents and players were shaken up but “everyone was fine”.
“They were a bit shocked with everyone at the park at the time. He (the victim) came running for help afterwards ... he was screaming for help,” he said.
“But everyone was fine.”
Mr Glotsis said police cordoned off the area and most people started to disperse by the time ambulance and police arrived.
Thurina Park in Villawood was the scene of a violent shooting last night. He said they will continue to train at the field.
“Our seniors turned up to train afterwards,” he said.
“It could happen anywhere.”
Police would like to speak to a man who might be able to assist with their inquiries.
He is described as being of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern appearance, 175-180cm tall, about 25 years old, with a black beard.
Mr Khan, who is known to police, is reportedly not co-operating with investigators.
He remains in hospital in a stable condition.
