Canada and Denmark on Tuesday finally settled the largely good-natured “whiskey war” that was fought for decades with weapons such as flags and bottles of alcohol over a tiny, barren, and uninhabited outcrop in the Arctic.

The two sides formally announced a deal to split Hans Island and effectively create the first land border between Canada and Europe at a signing ceremony in Ottawa with Canadian and Danish foreign ministers.

Dividing up the kidney-shaped island and resolving the 49-year-old benign impasse was held up as a model for peacefully resolving territorial disputes — contrasted with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Danes and Canadians have visited the rock by helicopter over the past decades to lay claim to it, leading to diplomatic protests, online campaigns and even a Canadian call to boycott Danish pastries.

During those ministerial visits, each side would plant a flag and leave behind a bottle of whiskey or schnapps for the other to enjoy, along with comical notes.

Hundreds of fake scientific papers from Chinese researchers have been published in British journals, prompting warnings of “industrialised cheating”.

The publishing arm of the Institute of Physics, a society founded in London in 1874, has been forced to retract nearly 900 papers so far this year. At least 497 of them were claimed to have been written by Chinese researchers, on topics ranging from chemical engineering to artificial intelligence. Others were meant to be from scientists in India and Iran.

In reality, the papers had been churned out by “paper mills”, shadowy operations that produce falsified research to order and arrange to have it published in western journals.

Muhoozi Kainerugaba, son of Ugandan dictator Yoweri Museveni, was promoted to the rank of general on Tuesday. Kainerugaba caused a stir on the previous day with a saucy Twitter rant in which he offered a 100-cow dowry for the hand of newly elected Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and threatened to invade Italy if his offer was refused.

Kainerugaba, 48, is seen as the likely successor to his 78-year-old father, who has been in power for 35 years. Until Tuesday, he held the rank of Lt.
