The good old 'mandate' argument. As for 'clear' ~ I'd hardly call a one seat majority anything like 'clear.'

But to go back to your mandate position. Just because a Party goes to an election with a grab bag of many policies/promises.......if they are elected, it does not follow that the majority supported every item in that grab bag.

Actually its a bit more complex than that.Over 50% wanted a plebiscite, but the key point is that 50% of those in the survey, wanted a binding plebiscite.

As far as I am aware though (and my legal knowledge has never been a strong point) a plebiscite cannot ever be fully binding. Nonetheless, I am almost certain that Coalition politicians would act in accordance with the way that the public voted.

"A plebiscite is not binding of parliamentarians, and there have been a number of Coalition MPs who have said they would either abstain from the vote or vote against any legislation".

I think that's wrong. I am 100% opposed to homosexual marriage but if the people were to vote for it then I would accept it.

It isn't "illegal" to live with somebody of the same sex, IF that is your thing.
