This Shocked Me
Aug 4th, 2017 at 11:46am

Teen Michelle Carter gets 15 months over texting-suicide case

"You can't think about it. You just have to do it. You said you were gonna do it. Like I don't get why you aren't," Carter wrote in one text.

She actually used the word 'like' in a text    Shocked

(Tragic story, by the way.)

My guess is she suffers from the same or similar mental illness the boy suffered from. Its likely they had discussed suicide together at length before, and that they were both contemplating suicide. Its almost certain that there was nothing vindictive about this, and she genuinely thought she was looking after him.

That's the way I saw it too.

She called him 'babe'.

I'm inclined to agree. Highly possible it's part of a suicide pact.

Ok. watched it.

The first thing i want to say is 48 hrs grates on me. I've tried to watch it a few times over the years because i'm interested in true crime but it's just not objective. It's absolutely chockers with prejudicial information and begins by making a case, then presenting it, rather than just laying out the facts and letting the viewer form their own natural conclusion. You know pretty quickly, in other words, what they want you to think.

So, i watched it with that in mind.

The defence was preposterous. But then again, 48hours didn't really thresh it out, and they ridiculed it. Still, it was silly. Had she pled some sort of suicide pact, she would have had a defence. As it stands, it looks very much like she was using him to get attention.

Still, obviously not all the way sane herself, i reckon she knew exactly what she was doing but just couldn't really fathom the depth of the consequences. I think she started getting attention from people when she talked to them about er suicidal boyfriend but that was probably starting to get boring to her listeners. So she upped the ante.

Cold. Ice cold.

Thanks for your response Mothra, I'm in agreement with all you've said here.

The point you make in relation to 48 Hours (or any other TV True Crime show) resonates strongly with me and is the primary reason that, whenever possible, I link such cases to the official court transcript.

Alinta, you may find some of these podcasts interesting:

http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/truecrime/

I haven't actually listened to any of these but i've heard a fair bit of John Safran cover true crime. He approaches it for a really interesting angle. Anyway, i really resonate with his style.

This nastiness doesn't surprise me. Women are absolutely ruthless toward beta males.
