Wasn't it alleged ALP luminary RJL Hawke who entertained people of dubious character?

Former Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke acknowledged that in 1978, through Tham, he met with Sal Amarena, a mafia associate, in what Mr Hawke described as an incidental meeting.[16] Mr Hawke, then President of the Australian Council of Trade Unions, was en route to Vancouver to attend a conference of the Socialist International congress and had a stop-over in San Francisco.[17]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Rudy_Tham

I can find the page in the Hawke Memoirs where he saved the world (page 13) but I can't find any reference to Hawke eschewing his chance meeting with a mafia heavy. Strange.

By tradition.
The 'Criminal Element' is amongst the 'poor' in Sydney.
While its the 'rich' in Melbourne.

...can see why the Victorian Liberal was 'just visiting' on the Monopoly Board.

The sad part of that is that most of the Labor miscreants of the various OPs have faced the judicial system and are in jail for it.  Whereas if you are in the Coalition, you can get away with basically anything as long as you have the money to pay for it or just refuse to resign.    Bottle of Grange anyone?  Work for Australian Water Holdings?   Fly a Helicopter to a liberal kneesup?

I'm better at this than you.

Do you want me to go fishing and find a topic where you have expanded the conversation or would you just rather be tagged as a whited sepulchre?

there is a big difference between an incidental meeting with someone when you attend a dinner or a party, or even a meeting with someone else. As MP's they attend lots of functions, parties and conferences, they cannot know every person who will be present at every one.

compare that to knowingly accepting donations for access  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

And the lies about not knowing he would be there begin to unravel Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

In transcripts of the phone recordings, the Liberal Party figure who organised the dinner, Barrie Macmillan, says he personally briefed Mr Guy's office about Mr Madafferi's presence at the dinner, and stressed the need to keep the meeting confidential.

"I had to forward the names to [Matthew Guy's private secretary]. I had to do it all through [her]. It was all kept fairly hush hush," says Mr Macmillan, who also attended the dinner.

"I explained the whole thing [to Mr Guy's secretary] and I said, the whole thing to her. And said, I don't want to put anything in writing here, so let's just talk on the phone and I then picked the venue and gave them the list of the people.
"Everyone I gave [to Mr Guy's office]: Antonio Madafferi, that's his full name; Frank Lamattina; Bruno Diaco.

"So this all started off in a big way with Matt, in helping Matt to become the next premier."

However, Mr Guy insisted to reporters today that there was no way of him knowing the alleged crime figure would be at the Lobster Cave.

Guy is telling porkies. If his private secretary knew Madafferi was there, he should have known too.

It's starting to look like we need a Royal Commission into the Mafia's links to the Liberal party.

Poor Juliar must have had to change its pants at Lib HQ today from the fright it got from the exposure of yet more Liberal party corruption. Did poor Juliar just wet itself or did poor Juliar go all the way to a bowel evacuation?
