Same-sex marriage: Public money to fund Yes campaign in ACT

Gay ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr has copped a backlash over his move to contribute "significant" Government resources to campaigning for a Yes vote in the upcoming same-sex marriage postal survey.



Mr Barr has secured the support of the ACT Legislative Assembly to use taxpayers' money to actively campaign in favour of same-sex marriage.

He said he wanted buses and flagpoles in Canberra to be turned into symbols of support for same-sex marriage.

The ACT Government is also considering creating rainbow roundabouts and commissioning rainbow-themed murals.

"There is no doubt that what lies ahead will be traumatic for some," Mr Barr said.
"For many people the concept of their relationship, their life, their family being the subject of discussion or debate or value judgement by everyone else is frankly an appalling concept."

But appearing on ABC radio to explain his position, Mr Barr was faced with incredulity from dozens of listeners both in favour and opposed to same-sex marriage.

"I'm a strong supporter of same-sex marriage but I just think it's a really big mistake for the Government to be using taxpayers' money to support one side of the argument," one caller said.

"I personally as a taxpayer ... object to my money being spent on this question, whether the Yes or the No vote," another said.

A third caller labelled the decision "morally wrong and outrageous".

Mr Barr said he did not have an exact figure for how much will be spent.

"This isn't a political issue, it's a human rights issue," he said.

"I imagine other state and territory governments will do similar things in coming weeks and months."
ACT Opposition Leader Alistair Coe said the Opposition did not support taxpayer resources being used for campaigning on either side of the debate.

"By the ACT Government joining and actively participating in the campaign to achieve marriage equality, this is politicising the public service," he said.

"I believe it is wrong to use the resources of government for such a campaign."

In 2012, the ACT became the first jurisdiction in Australia to legalise same-sex marriage, only to have the new legislation quashed by the High Court a week later.
