NUKE IT cries a lib

Liberal MP stands by nuclear energy option

Nuclear technology sits hand in hand with concerns about North Korea but one federal MP believes there's also room for it in the energy debate.

Assistant minister Jane Prentice on Thursday again flagged support for nuclear power as a long-term solution.

"It is clean and I think there are opportunities," she told reporters in Canberra.

"I think the new nuclear technology is much safer than the old one and I think it should be on the discussion paper if we're serious about long-term clean energy."

The government is weighing up a clean energy target, the only recommendation it is yet to address from Chief Scientist Alan Finkel's review of the national electricity market.

"Of course, our problem at the moment is short-term power and making it affordable, making it sustainable and reliable," Ms Prentice said.

"I always believe that you need a longer term strategy as well.

Nuclear fusion reactor probably have more potential than nuclear fission reactors.   However, it requires cutting edge technology in construction and engineering.  Not to mention security issues.   Unfortunately, other countries like USA does not like to share much of these technology with other countries.

The problem with going nuclear in Australia is that even if the government confirmed tomorrow that they were going to built a plant, it would probably be another 20 years of regulatory issues and beating back environmentalists before the plant was completed. During that time, you'd probably see advances in renewables and storage that would outweigh the benefits of building a nuclear power plant in the first place. Keep in mind that the most recently built nuclear plant in the US took 43 years to complete.

If we did go down the nuclear path, I'd recommend that we dedicate funding towards Focus Fusion or Project Pacer. Focus Fusion provides a method of converting nuclear fusion events directly into electricity, ie it doesn't need a steam turbine. Project Pacer proposed detonating a 2 kiloton thermonuclear bomb every 20 minutes in a specially designed chamber that used molten salt to capture the heat.

America doesn't want us to go there: it's an unwritten rule!
