Actually the war is far from over. Everyday, with the retreat of ISIS, it would bring us closer to conflict with Russia. If you read it carefully, its the US backed Syrian opposition forces that took over the city. It is NOT the Syrian national force backed by Russia. The US is laying the foundation for the next phase - to destabilize Syria, and install a Syrian puppet government that is ineffective like the Iraqi and Libya right now.
ISIS is just a small player in the grand scheme of things to come.
That would put the US in direct military confrontation with Russia.
Do you think this is Trump's plan?
I am not sure if this is particularly Trump's plan. It is however consistent with US long term strategy of contain and squeeze dating back to the days of JFK and cuban missile crisis - and it has bipartisan support in USA. Hillary Clinton proposed a no fly zone over Syria (similar to the one proposed for Libya) that would have bought the west into direct military confrontation. Trump disagreed, and at times even praised Putin, whether or not, there is dirt there, its still under investigation. But after that, the US did the exact opposite. It bombed a Syrian airport (abit, it warned the Russian forces who stationed there beforehand), and now this. This also quietly puts us closer to direct confrontation with Russia.
Elsewhere, Trump is trying to take down the Iran Nuclear deal. The ultimate aim is also Russia. Now, the current Iranian government is actually quite a moderate - pro west - in comparison to the previous Ahmadinejad - so it showed that Iranian people WANTS to have closer ties with the West / Europe. However, with Trump's recent action, it would soon turn this tide, and very likely a more hard line government will take its place come the next election. This sets up for theatre two.
Theatre three is the all important North Korea. It is just sitting duck for one error to be made by any side, and the rest is history. North Korea of course is about containing China.
The same with other minor theatres like Tibet, Taiwan, and IndoChina conflict.
All this, we have not even touched Africa....
I just cant fight the feeling that international terrorism is just a sort of smoke screen, to distract us as all of those pieces are moving into place. The timings between them are quiet elegant, and appear to be pre planned rather than reactionary. Terrorism is a problem, but, like I have said time and time again. ISIS even having issues holding onto their own territory, so its actually more of a regional issue. Russia, and China on the other hand, is very different.
