Some dogs cost thousands of dollars.

And some cost next to nothing.

Should we be looking at saving a dog from a shelter/pound?

It's hard to know what to do.

YES.

They are much better and really happy to be given a 2nd chance.
They know they are in a bad spot.

You get a dog that has had it's shots, a vets check, been desexed, get a guarantee with it.

We are foster carers for cats.

Yes, but you also have to be prepared for a dud. It happens despite all care taken.

yes, that is a possibility.
with the RSPCA you can take it back and get another. No cost.

they check the dogs out and won't give out one who is aggressive to a family.

Same with cats - they won't give you an aggressive cat that will attack you or the kids.

If you can see the pup's parents and how they behave, you've usually got an idea what the pup will be like, providing you socialise it. Unfortunately, dogs from the shelter are usually ill-treated and you can't see their parents. The same applies to pet shop puppies.

Labradors can be good pups in households with children, but no child should be left alone with any breed of dog.

Labs & Retrievers are good with kids - they won't bite.

But - as per above - you need to vacuum every day - they malt all year round.

What's the difference btwn a Labrador and a Labradoodle?

Aren't Golden Retrievers the same dog?

Apologies for asking so many questions....I'm learning.

Plus I know I'll be the one who'll end up taking proper care of the animal we get. Roll Eyes

yes lisa.

the kids won't feed it, exercise it  or clean up after it.
they won't pay the food bills or vets bills.

well within a week they will ignore it entirely and play on the computer just like they do now.

Labradoodle is a labrador X poodle, part lab part poodle.

Golden Retrievers are a different breed to a Labrador. They look similar but the Retriever has a longer coat and genetically is used as a gun dog. Labs can also be used for game retrieval. They have a slightly softer temperament than the Retriever.

Labradors are used as guide dogs - they aren't all stupid.
