Bill Maher identifies cause of Trump popularity
May 12th, 2018 at 3:00pm

Albeit with probable unintentionality…

Says Maher during his ‘New Rules’ monologue:

“People call this presidency a reality show… Its more like a Scorsese movie. Everything Trump does is modelled on the mob…

Who does Trump surrounded himself with? Disposable lawyers and idiot members of his own family.

Who’s his worst enemy? The FBI.

Where does his money come from? He’s in ‘construction’… Fugget-aboud-it.

He’s so much like a don, his name is literally ‘Don’ “.

“What part of this isn’t mob-like? They’re using a legitimate front business, in this case the White House, to enrich the family…”

He goes on to make comedic comparisons of Trump’s people to mobster characters including referring to Giuliani’s comment RE Michael Cohen: ‘He did his job. He made it go away’.

“Made it go away?”, asks Maher, “…Yeah, that’s why Cohen always has the look of a rat that can’t get out of the toilet”.

And, admitting that he never liked Trump (thinking of him pre-politics as an ‘egomaniac and a blowhard’), Maher realises now that Trump is and always was ‘a cheap hood all along. A common thug’.

And that’s when Maher (maybe accidentally) stumbles on the one thing that supporters love about Trump and why he has their support, despite the kind of low life character he aspires to …

To them he represents the archetypal American ‘mobster’, defined, not so much from the Godfather, as The Sopranos… An archetype rising from the most admired persona in the American cultural pantheon of antiheroes.

Admired even more than its heroes.

Typical Bill Maher making out people are stupid. They voted for Trump because the other mob failed them. It isn't hard Bill you dill.

It was a good rant.

That's the thing about Maher, he always uses the facts against his opponents and his critics hate it so much because they can't counteract or dismiss his claims,

True.

So in response Trump’s ‘defence’ has descended into a perverse (but very American) rehash of an ancient gambit once deployed by Plato in his defence of Socrates, vomited up in the modern mob-like vernacular - ‘Yeah that’s right’.

It’s not an unscripted coincidence that Trump and his mob act and sound like the mob.

They’re attempting to deploy Coppola’s cinematic device (subverting the ugly reality of New York lowlifes into the glorified lives of the Caesars) iced with David Chase’s Sopranos.

‘Yeah that’s right’.

And why does it seem to be working?

Is there anyone (at least in the English-speaking world) who doesn’t admire and acknowledge the rasping lines of Brando’s Vito Corleone as the signature-speak of the imperious crime-boss?

How many covertly love Tony Soprano’s unfettered acting on his ‘id’ impulses?

It’s admittedly charismatic stuff.

But it’s easily forgotten today how many Italian-Americans were deeply offended by their ‘type-casting’ through the popularity of ‘The Godfather’, rendering all of them latent criminals.

Hopefully, Americans will soon wake to the reality that their don-cum-president is imposing on them the same stereotype.

You got him North! Trump is the Godfather of US  politics. Assassinates his detractors.

He stole the Presidency to make a fortune - turned down his salary and works 24 hours a day to squirrel away the US wealth into gold bars that he hides under Trump Tower. Cheesy

Yes of course - this is the results of 2 years investigation from the highly partisan FBI and a year and a half's special council conclusions.

They weren't, until recently, investigating his personal business dealing pre-politics, not until it was shown that Russia has been financing him.

To borrow the logic used by Trump supporters, all the "evidence" we need, the smoking gun, is that Trump wouldn't release his tax returns.  This would show to the people where he got his money and how little tax he paid, therefor proving he's guilty because if he was innocent, why wouldn't he release them?

Back in the real world, I'd be waiting until the investigations were complete before making claims that you have Rich, or are you trying to preemptively dismiss the inevitable findings?

Remember, these investigations didn't start with investigating Trump, they started with Russian interference with the US Election.

It can't be helped if that is linked to Trump.

I would have to disagree with that.
i think the last couple of decades have seen leaders like clinton, oblama, blair, david cameron, theresa myers, merkel , rudd, gillard, turnbull who are WHIMPS and INEFFECTUALS.

and the population look at a leader and say "he lets everyone walk all over him, he is spineless"
and when they see a leader behave in such a weak way, they dont feel safe and protected.

The rise of Putin, Trump and Deterte is entirely predictable and entirely natural.

People are drawn to strength. they've had enough of the bland and the biege.
and not a moment too soon

Trump is yet to earn his "good name", and his supporters have an apparent fatal allergy to the truth.

If they want to be treated nicer they could earn that respect first maybe?

Read a damn book some time, learn Trump's history pre-politics.  Look at his business deals.  Learn who he really is.

If you still think he's a good man, you'd be entitled to that opinion, no matter how wrong it would be.

The facts are all there for anyone to see, anyone who cares about the truth anyway.

I know, I'm preaching to a faithful Trump follower, I know I'm wasting my time.  First reading?  Yeah, not for you I know, but reading about uncomfortable truths about Trump?

Yeah, even less likely, I know.
