You got him North!

If it makes you feel better, he wasn't the first to hijack cultural mythical beings to define himself...

There was George W Bush with his 'Top Gun' impression on-board the USS Abraham Lincoln, where he declared 'Mission Accomplished' after arriving, as he did, in a flight suit, in case anyone didn't make the connection. This was a theme post 2003 that Bush seemed to endorse and encourage.

Then there was Reagan's evoking of Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry... 'Make my day'... Although when it came to political imagery, Reagan was a 'westerns' guy... That choreographed vignette of him and the Queen of England on horseback, replete with a horse-drawn wagon following them, helping to cement his 'westerns guy' image...

Americans appear to love their cultural mythology echoed through real-life, as if there really was a 'Dirty Harry' vigilante-cop prowling the streets of America's iconic cities or a laconic Clint Eastwood character dispensing gunpoint justice in the main street of a backwater town....

... Or even a 'Vito Corleone' conspiring, racketeering and meting out vendetta (dementia?) in the name of his family.

Although, in Trump's case, he should have gone for, at best, Larry Hagman's 'J R Ewing'... Or, maybe more accurately, John Goodman's 'King Ralph'.

Is AiA an acronym for Asshole in Atlanta?

Albeit with probable unintentionality…

Says Maher during his ‘New Rules’ monologue:

“People call this presidency a reality show… Its more like a Scorsese movie. Everything Trump does is modelled on the mob…

Who does Trump surrounded himself with? Disposable lawyers and idiot members of his own family.

Who’s his worst enemy? The FBI.

Where does his money come from? He’s in ‘construction’… Fugget-aboud-it.

He’s so much like a don, his name is literally ‘Don’ “.

“What part of this isn’t mob-like? They’re using a legitimate front business, in this case the White House, to enrich the family…”

He goes on to make comedic comparisons of Trump’s people to mobster characters including referring to Giuliani’s comment RE Michael Cohen: ‘He did his job. He made it go away’.

“Made it go away?”, asks Maher, “…Yeah, that’s why Cohen always has the look of a rat that can’t get out of the toilet”.

And, admitting that he never liked Trump (thinking of him pre-politics as an ‘egomaniac and a blowhard’), Maher realises now that Trump is and always was ‘a cheap hood all along. A common thug’.

And that’s when Maher (maybe accidentally) stumbles on the one thing that supporters love about Trump and why he has their support, despite the kind of low life character he aspires to …

To them he represents the archetypal American ‘mobster’, defined, not so much from the Godfather, as The Sopranos… An archetype rising from the most admired persona in the American cultural pantheon of antiheroes.

Admired even more than its heroes.

The last couple decades all the politicians have been that way (to a lesser extent) at least in australia england and america. They are thugs and mobsters. They are the only choices we are given though.

Spot

I would have to disagree with that.
i think the last couple of decades have seen leaders like clinton, oblama, blair, david cameron, theresa myers, merkel , rudd, gillard, turnbull who are WHIMPS and INEFFECTUALS.

and the population look at a leader and say "he lets everyone walk all over him, he is spineless"
and when they see a leader behave in such a weak way, they dont feel safe and protected.

The rise of Putin, Trump and Deterte is entirely predictable and entirely natural.

People are drawn to strength. they've had enough of the bland and the biege.
and not a moment too soon

Good grief, horseboy... Are you seriously lauding Putin and Duterte?????  They are dictators and mass murderers in the mold of Hitler and Stalin.

So again... are you actually supporting these monsters?  Does someone need to take you behind the woodshed and beat the crap outta you until you learn?
