My guess is that it gives the cops probable cause to search. Funnily enough the dogs go crazy in the back of the wagon when they pass the soup kitchen.

I asked a policeman with a dog in Fortitude Valley train station one night whether they get the dogs addicted to drugs to encourage them to sniff them out. He denied this allegation. He also denied it was a drug dog. I think it was more of a biting hippies dog. For some reason the dog started barking at me. A loud bark is pretty intimidating in a small space, but the animal was calm and completely under control. They have them well trained. Not sure if they have a way of signalling to the dog what to do. I didn't notice anything.

Nonsense, drug detection dogs have something like a 70/85% detection rate. Now if your saying not everybody where there is an indication has drugs on them, that is quite correct, however in 80% of cases where the dog indicates the subject has either residue or if there are no drugs found, they get the scent of drugs which were present maybe a week ago. And if the dog indicates wrongly, its is due to poor training, not unreliability.

better safe than sorry

I set alarms off at airports every time... and go through the same thing....guilty until proven innocent...

I dont mind it makes the place safer.. same with drugs....we need more dogs....they are quite incredible.......

Most people who get a false positive are inconvenienced for about 5 minutes and as a bonus, get a chat with a friendly policeman and get to see a cute doggy.

I reckon tho, rather than only picking on young kids at concerts and nightclubs, they should have a walk around Martin Place at lunch time and watch all the cocaine busts.

did you happen to see that doco on Portugal how they decriminalised drugs about 20 years ago....they still have a lot of drug addicts though...so not sure what they call success as instead of going after the druggie its only the pushers they arrest.......

I thi nk fewer deaths is the main thing but seeing the addicts getting their methadone they still looked like drug addicts....sad..

Currency detection is usually when dogs are trained to specifically detect currency, these are used at airports and when they are used on drug raids, and may be dual purpose trained drugs and currency. These dogs are usually high energy animals such as Springer Spaniels. Dogs at train stations are usually Labradors (which are a slower drive dog) which are less alarming to the public.

General Purpose Police Dogs are GSDs or Malinois (which is a more recent breed on the scene). These are trained to track, search, and apprehend (Bite).
