The Little Things

A slow burn. High level of suspense.  Shocked

Denzel Washington excellent as usual. Rami Malek (of Bohemian Rhapsody fame) also very good.

Deke (Denzel Washington), a burnt-out Kern County, CA deputy sheriff teams up with Baxter (Rami Malek), a crack LASD detective, to nab a serial killer. Deke's nose for the "little things" proves eerily accurate, but his willingness to circumvent the rules embroils Baxter in a soul-shattering dilemma. Meanwhile, Deke must wrestle with a dark secret from his past.

I was going to see that "Little Things" movie today. But I got caught up in sleeping through the heatwave. I might see it on Thursday.

Edit: I might go pay money to watch this in cinemas on Thursday. The sound on my computer is not doing much for me to listen to the dialogue. Seems like a movie to watch on the big screen with surround sound.

The lack of good movie releases of recent have been really irritating for going to the cinema. I have saved probably hundreds of dollars on watching movies at home for free. But I would prefer to sit around a cinema in the cool (especially during the summer months) watching some blockbuster movies.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Breakfast Club.  Watched both as they were recent purchases by my daughter.  Both are excellent explorations of what it was to be a teenager in the 1980s.  Both are well written and both are well acted. Cool

Excellent movies. When I was in the navy my unofficial disciplinary requirement for sailors falling behind in their submarine qualifications to remain on board on Saturdays was known as The Breakfast Club.  Cool

The Queensland Police Academy has recruits have a course where they are required to watch the movie "Police Academy". The purpose is for them to take notes of scenes and not laugh at all. If they do, they fail that part of the course.

I thought, "where is the challenge here?" when told that story.

High Ground

An Australian frontier movie about a group of police officers who go on the hunt for some cattle thieves who killed a cow at a station. The officers find the 'offenders' and proceed to hunt down them and the tribe that the 'assailants' sought shelter. 'Gutjuk' is an aboriginal boy that gets rescued from the aftermath of the slaughter and then is raised on the mission. Baywara is one of the victims of the massacre, who then goes on to seek revenge for the killing of his family and the reconnection with Gutjuk.

This movie is quite a violent movie and well deserving of its MA rating. Plenty of cinematography and the use of drone footage to amplify the isolation of the scenery. All the cast members put in good performances. Though, I sometimes wonder if Jack Thompson is passed his used-by-date and should consider retirement. Thompson is still good as the senior officer on scene. Simon Baker plays a good character of the sniper who tried to be the voice of reason. Callan Mulvey probably plays the best character acting since his days on the show "Underbelly". Mulvey had been underappreciated since working in Marvel and DC Comics as the villain. The remainder of the cast work well to support the lead actors in this story.

This movie is not for the faint of heart and definitely not to be seen by children. But, the film should become a well-liked classic in years to come.

I do try to write good movie reviews. I became a cinephile years ago. But lately, the eagerness has worn off.

Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book produce in 1942 by the Korda Brothers, starring Sabu and of course a host of Indian Jungle beasts.  No, it doesn't follow the book all that closely but is quite an entertaining movie in it's own right.  It starts with a young Memsahib meeting an Indian story teller and him telling the story of Mowgli, the Frog who was raised by Wolves.  Made in the first years of the war in Hollywood, it is in colour and like all early technicolour movies quite vivid.  Well worth watching.  It is available on SBS on-demand at the moment.

I watched the first 10 minutes of this movie and was really impressed.

Things to come, is another Korda classic.  Their movies were truly visionary at the time.  Well worth watching IMO.

Kong versus Godzilla.  An interesting film.  There can apparently be only one Alpha beast and Kong cannot tolerate Godzillas existence, just as Godzilla cannot tolerate Kong.  Introduces the concepts of "hollow earth" and a massive fight between the two Kaiju, until Mechazilla appears and both unite and turn on it.  Could be retitled "the last life of Kevin."  Kevin is of course, the stupid head that got chopped off the Monster Zero's body in the last Godzilla movie.  Seems he got sold and is now being used to animate Mechazilla and gee, is Kevin not only stupid, he's angry.  Hong Kong was due for redevelopment and the Kaiju provide the opportunity.  Not as good IMO as the last Japanese Godzilla movie - at least in that one you got to see the JSDF in action, tanks and all.  I still think the original 1954 version is the best.  Bit loud and shouty this version.  Stars Julian Dennison as an annoying adolescent hacker.
