The latest James Bond movie - 'No Time To Die'

Boring.

I got half way through and had to stop.

I haven't seen a Bond film for years, and now I can see why.

That franchise hasn't aged well.

It's very rare that I give up on a film, but I just couldn't waste another hour of my life watching 'No Time To Die'.

Bloody awful film.

Seems I'm not the only one.

Just found a pile of bad reviews.

Example:

Producers will blame the poor box office of "No Time to Die" on COVID but that's not why it's bombing. The movie is failing because there is no audience for it. It certainly wasn't made for fans of the Bond films (like me). The movie looks great with terrific location photography, the title is cool and Bond girls Lea Seydoux and Ana de Armas are wildly dreamy. Other than that, this movie has little to offer. The story isn't that interesting and the villain is weak. If there wasn't a lady in the theater (AMC Westbury, NY) laughing once in a while, I wouldn't have even noticed the jokes. It's also about twenty minutes too long. "No Time to Die" bites the hand that feeds it. It is, hands down, the worst movie of Daniel Craig's not-so-hot tenure as James Bond.

Having spent $100 for the boxset of 24 Bond movies, I will likely had "No time to die" to the collection. That, despite only having watched the first 20 minutes of the movie. Let us not be too hasty to condemn the movie.

It's a pretty bad movie, dude.

Having read all of Fleming's novels of James Bond and seen all of the movies, starting with Dr No in the early 60's, I'm old enough to claim that No Time To Die, which I have just watched, should not be called a James Bond film. He really is not the character created, either by Fleming or the actors who played him previously to Daniel Craig. Sean Connery will always be the definitive screen Bond and Daniel Craig the most miscast actor for me. No Time To Die is a dreary, over long action romp, but is the worst Bond film in the franchise due to the lead being totally out of character from the one that Fleming created. The best thing about this movie is a very short, but scintillating performance by Anna De Armas who comes and goes far too quickly. Completely out of character for James Bond, this is a dreary failure in the franchise.

Having just gone out to buy a three pack of Halloween movies for $12.98, I am not really fussed if the recent James Bond movie is not all that great. It will complete my collection, just as the Halloween DVD purchase did for me.

When my daughter was from pre teens to mid teens I took her to see the Harry Potter movies, Mostly the midnight session on the opening night.

We went to see "The Secrets of Dumbledore" The other week. It was OK.

I believe you but will have a look myself anyway.

Sean Connery was James Bond the rest were actors playing him.

I didn't hate Roger Moore but I was that age at the time.

I went to see "The Secrets of Dumbledore" as a "why not?" type movie to see. It was pretty good. Much better than the second Fantastic Beasts movie. And about as good as the first Fantastic Beasts movie.

I had not watched James Bond movies for about 2 years. But I recall that I was pleasantly surprised how good the 1960 to the 1980s movies were. Perhaps one of the 1980s movies was not that good. And the 1990s James Bond movies were a good update to the character. Other than Casino Royale (which was rather bland), Daniel Craig has played a good James Bond. Nothing bad was shown in the recent James Bond movie, of the first 20 minutes that I have watched.

Senior Year

Seeing that AiA brought up the topic of Rebel Wilson being sexually harrassed, it was brought to attention that Wilson had a new movie coming out. The more free publicity, the better it seems.

This is not a bad teen-oriented movie. Angourie Rice stars as the younger version of Steph Conway -- a 17 year old cheer leader... uh... cheer captain, looking to become prom queen of her high school in the year 2002. Steph has it all going for her. A loving father, a popular boyfriend, a car, popularity, and a cheer squad that mostly respects her. Unfortunately, a bitter rival (and the legitimate girlfriend to Steph's crush), Tiff, sabotages the cheer routine where Steph falls into a coma... for nearly 20 years. Enter Rebel Wilson's 37 year old version of the Steph Conway awakening in hospital to the sound of her former boyfriend pitching a commercial on television. From there, Steph has to discover her new life of the year 2022 and rediscover who she is as an adult and not a teenager.

This movie is quite a reasonable entertaining movie for something that would do well to appeal to those that were going through high school years in the year 2002 or thereabouts. Rebel plays the role of out of place and in the body of someone she feels that she is not. Still under the impression that she is still 17 years old, she has to adjust to how to act as an adult. Unfortunately, "Steph" lets her ego get the better of her. Not able to reconcile the lost years, Steph has to re-enrol in her old high school to re-engage in her final year to graduate. However, as the world has changed, Steph has to figure out where she fits in society. How does she cope with age discrimination of other students and people in general?

Rebel and Angourie playing different ages of the same character, Steph, are a great pair. Angourie channels Rebel so well, it is obvious that Ang had worked closely to mimic Rebel's characteristics. "Steph" is somewhat a villainous character. She is basically a good person. However, she is meddling in other people's lives, stealing her rival, Tiff's, boyfriend. And then there is the issue of neglecting her close friends who love her but feel betrayed by her. This is a character trait that is common in both the 17 year old version and the 37 year old version of Steph. As you will see through the story, there are various redemption arcs that many of the characters go through as well as the betrayed forming a forgive and forget angle for their friendships with one another. Take my word for this, if you do not know who the villains are in the movie, it gets difficult to find one by the end of the movie.

A decent movie. Rating of a B- would be generous enough. The awkwardness of the scenes in places were deliberate. But they just helped contrast and highlight all the good parts of the movie. It would have been a boring movie with them.

The northmen.

First 45 minutes was ok but after that it turned from a cinema experience to a series on tv.

3 out of 10.

Never watching it again.

Northman was such a great movie that I find it blasphemous that you call it 3 out of 10.

The Commitments

I watched this first, when it came out in 1991.  It was a great movie then and it has stood the test of time very well.  It makes rather explicit the poverty of Ireland back in the 1970s which has, I understand because of massive injection of funds from the EU been fixed.  The band are made up of poor, misfits who don't fit into Irish society.  You have a great singer who likes to get pissed.  You have a great trumpet player who appears to have jammed with all the greats.  You have three pretty backup singers and a couple of wastrel guitar players and a medical student piano player who plays the church organ in his spare time.  The drum player isn't bad but he doesn't like the singer, the three girls are all jealous of one another and all at various stages bed the trumpet player.  They all play well together when they can be bothered and on the verge of success breakup because of petty jealousies.

Overall, I'd give it a 9 out of ten.  Well worth watching if only for the great music.  Get the sound track, it's a great listen. Smiley

Hairspray

I first saw this when it was first released in 1988.  It is a great movie if for nothing else, it's soundtrack.  Well worth listening to.  It tells the story of Tracy Turnblad and her girlfriend Penny Pengleton and the desegregation of a Baltimore TV station and it's hip program, "The Corny Collins Show" (based on the real life Buddy Deane Show).   Tracy is a strong enough dancer, despite her plus size to star on the Corny Collins show, which raises the ire of the previous queen, Amber Von Tussle a vain, privileged girl.  In the process she is introduced to Mabel "Motormouth" Stubbs, the mother of a black boy at her high school, who Penny falls in love with.  It features Divine, Debby Harry, Sonny Bono and Pia Zadora who are all great.   Along the way, Divine and Tracy become models for a Plus Sized courtier and she is locked up for protesting on the behalf of the black community.  This movie shows the America we only read about: segregated and separated.  Brutal police and a hateful white community who brook no opposition to their rule.  Pia Zadora lives up to her reputation as a bad actress but she is great amongst so much mediocrity.  John Waters excels once again.  It is so much better than the remake with John Travolta in the Divine role in 2007, if for nothing more than Pia Zadora quoting from "Howl".

Overall, I'd give it a high rating of an 8 or 9 out 10.  Well worth watching and listening to.  Available on SBS Ondemand.

Top Gun: Maverick

Three years waiting for its release, Top Gun: Maverick finally gets its Australian release in May of 2022. And it was worth the wait. This high energy fighter jet movie stays true to the original. And the sequel surpasses it in many ways.

We find Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise) arriving at an airbase ready to test pilot "Dark Star", a high tech, hypersonic scramjet. Rear Admiral Cain (Ed Harris) decides to shut down the program in favour of drone funding. However, Captain Mitchell decides to do a Mach 10 test flight, in order to save the program (and the career of his comrades in the program). The test flight is both a success and a failure.

Cain decides to, under the instruction of Admiral Tom "Iceman" Kazansky (Val Kilmer), reassign Mitchell to Top Gun to train the next generation of fighter pilots. Upon arrival at his old North Island training base, he finds that the son of his former co-pilot and best friend is training as a pilot. Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw is still bitter not only at the loss of his father Nick "Goose" Bradshaw, but that Mitchell wanted to pull "Rooster" from the flight training.

After handing the students' arses to them in flight training, the focus comes to an actual training for a mission in (some place that is not really explained) to destroy a uranium enrichment plant. The training program includes how to fly low through valleys to avoid radar, and to get to the target within 3 minutes. Each of the students fail the simulation. Only Rooster reaches the target, but well after the deadline elapses. It takes Pete "Maverick" Mitchell to show them how it is done.

After that, the students begin to believe in their ability to do the mission. With near casualties during the remainder of the training, Maverick is asked to lead the mission. Rooster is asked to strike the target at the uranium facility. From there, the action really takes off -- pun intended.

A very good movie. True to the original. But, updated in a way 30 years after the original movie pulled off an action drama to thrill audiences. You will be impressed by how Cruise has matured the character to be both more respectable, yet still the same rebel he was in the first movie. I did feel that some of the younger cast members seemed a little out of place as pilots. But, they managed to keep the story rolling along and were not a bunch of misfits you might expect in a modern action movie. Jennifer Connelly plays "Penny", the love interest of Maverick. She keeps Maverick 'grounded' in reality with sound advice.

I would recommend this movie not only to those who are Top Gun fans, but to people in general. There is enough drama and feel-good moments to keep people engaged in the storyline. And the action will have you moving in your movie chair and on the edge of your seat. And whilst you might criticise the reality and plausibility of the action, there is no denying the entertaining nature of the movie is there to be enjoyed.

Rating: A-
