Less gay than the first one. In fact, they did not even do a token gay person in the movie.

No. It was refreshing. They did the token black and the token female fighter pilots. They concentrated on the animosity Lt Bradshaw had for Captain Mitchell, over the loss of "Goose". There was the redemption arc that Mitchell was trying to achieve for his fart-arsing about over 30 years beforehand, during the events of Top Gun (and an apparent love interest he had with "Penny" in the next few years). And Mitchell had to figure out a way to gain the respect of not only his students but also his superiors. Overall, an improvement on the original movie.

PRIDE

The Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners.  The scene is set, it is the UK in the early 1980s, Thatcherism and the Miners' Strike grip the land.  One day a young Gay man wakes up and is preparing breakfast and watching TV news.  A report appears about the Miners' strike and how some mining communities are doing it tough.  Mark Ashton, becomes the leader of a small group of activists who collect money for the Miners.  Problem is, no one wants their money.  As soon as they mention who they are, they are hung up on.  So, instead, they phone a mining community in Wales direct and are told, "OK we'll take your money, hang on a minute and we'll direct someone to you to take it!"   Based in a Gay and Lesbian bookshop run by Gethin and his boyfriend Jonathan, they meet David (Dai) from Wales and invite him along to their local where he is a hit.  Bromley is a young gay man who hooks up with them during a gay pride march but doesn't want to be noticed as gay.

They all go to Wales on an invite from the Strike Committee to be met by Cliff Barry, a leader of the men's union and the other members of the committee, including their undoubtable leader Hefina.  Unsure of their welcome at first, they soon become a hit, with Jonathan putting on a show of disco dancing with the ladies of the village.  The result of which is some of the miners realise he's a bit of a "chick magnet" ask whether they can learn to dance with him.  During their visit, Dai explains the symbology of the lodge banner with it's two clasping hands: "you support us and we'll support you in your endeavours."

After further adventures the movie closes with the 1985 Gay Pride march when is suddenly besieged by busloads of miners from the surrounding lodges who have come to support the Gays and Lesbians because they supported them.  At the very end, it is explained that the Council of Trade Unions adopted a motion supporting the Gays and Lesbians because of a block vote from the miners union.

I'd give this a 8 out 10, a movie well worth watching because of the culture clashes between the miners and the gays.   Smiley

Interceptor

This Australian-American production (filmed in Sydney) kind of sucks. That is, if you look at the fight scenes inclusive and the plausibility of the storyline. Other than that, this movie is okay.

Elsa Pataky stars as the lead protagonist. Luke Bracey stars as the lead antagonist. Most actors here have either an Australian or New Zealand citizenship. The fact that only Elsa is doing an accent other than an American accent does nothing to help this movie. Non-American actors (and I think there might only be one or two exceptions in the cast) make it difficult to take these characters seriously.

The movie focuses on a missile interceptor facility in the middle of the Pacific. A Captain Collins (Pataky) in the military is assigned to the base for some reason. Her commanding officer General Crowthorne has some reason for the captain to be there. Unluckily, a terror attack has taken place and 16 nuclear warheads with missiles have been acquired by rogue Russian terrorists, ready to strike 16 cities in the USA.

We quickly learn who is on whose side in this movie. We also find out that Captain Collins is about as tough as a cyborg. She could take punishment from the villains with little injury... except if she gets shot in the arm with a small arms weapon. Then she cannot move her arm at all. Fortunately, the villains involved in the take over of the interceptor facility have about as much brains as school children. Their shooting ability leave a lot to be desired in terms of marksmanship. And decisions to just simply kill the main protagonist and do it quickly do not eventuate when the time was needed.

Whatever you think about this second-rate movie, to enjoy the movie you need to be forgiving of these flaws. The interaction between Captain Collins and Alexander Kessel is quite good. The villain trying to appeal to the protagonist to change sides is quite 'romantic' in a way. However, it is the end game of what he is proposing that makes the whole situation seem outright stupid.

If you would like to support an Australian produced movie and you have 97 minutes to spare, this movie is quite okay. Otherwise, wait for it to get screened on television in a few years time.

I cannot rate this movie much more than a C+.

Top Gun: Maverick

Three years waiting for its release, Top Gun: Maverick finally gets its Australian release in May of 2022. And it was worth the wait. This high energy fighter jet movie stays true to the original. And the sequel surpasses it in many ways.

We find Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise) arriving at an airbase ready to test pilot "Dark Star", a high tech, hypersonic scramjet. Rear Admiral Cain (Ed Harris) decides to shut down the program in favour of drone funding. However, Captain Mitchell decides to do a Mach 10 test flight, in order to save the program (and the career of his comrades in the program). The test flight is both a success and a failure.

Cain decides to, under the instruction of Admiral Tom "Iceman" Kazansky (Val Kilmer), reassign Mitchell to Top Gun to train the next generation of fighter pilots. Upon arrival at his old North Island training base, he finds that the son of his former co-pilot and best friend is training as a pilot. Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw is still bitter not only at the loss of his father Nick "Goose" Bradshaw, but that Mitchell wanted to pull "Rooster" from the flight training.

After handing the students' arses to them in flight training, the focus comes to an actual training for a mission in (some place that is not really explained) to destroy a uranium enrichment plant. The training program includes how to fly low through valleys to avoid radar, and to get to the target within 3 minutes. Each of the students fail the simulation. Only Rooster reaches the target, but well after the deadline elapses. It takes Pete "Maverick" Mitchell to show them how it is done.

After that, the students begin to believe in their ability to do the mission. With near casualties during the remainder of the training, Maverick is asked to lead the mission. Rooster is asked to strike the target at the uranium facility. From there, the action really takes off -- pun intended.

A very good movie. True to the original. But, updated in a way 30 years after the original movie pulled off an action drama to thrill audiences. You will be impressed by how Cruise has matured the character to be both more respectable, yet still the same rebel he was in the first movie. I did feel that some of the younger cast members seemed a little out of place as pilots. But, they managed to keep the story rolling along and were not a bunch of misfits you might expect in a modern action movie. Jennifer Connelly plays "Penny", the love interest of Maverick. She keeps Maverick 'grounded' in reality with sound advice.

I would recommend this movie not only to those who are Top Gun fans, but to people in general. There is enough drama and feel-good moments to keep people engaged in the storyline. And the action will have you moving in your movie chair and on the edge of your seat. And whilst you might criticise the reality and plausibility of the action, there is no denying the entertaining nature of the movie is there to be enjoyed.

Rating: A-

Saw it yesterday and I thought it was very good.

Given that the entire premise of the story was absurd ... as if a team of jets would ever be used on such a target.  Roll Eyes

However, despite that quibble, it was a good movie.  Cool

Yeah. I have to admit that it seemed strange that the Navy employ fighter-bombers to take down a target hidden in the mountains of "Not Russia". The movie felt more like a video game rather than a movie. However, the movie "Top Gun: Maverick" is far better than its original.

Jurassic World: Dominion

The final movie of the Jurassic World trilogy (hopefully) is probably the best movie of the trilogy. Sam Neill and Laura Dern return to reprise their roles from the first Jurassic Park movie. And they are a welcome return to the storyline.

Jurassic World: Dominion starts off with a world that is still learning to live with dinosaurs in the wild (and in cities). Owen Grady and Claire Dearing are now living in isolation, trying to keep a vigilance on the illegal dinosaur breeding program.

Meanwhile, a company called BioSyn has been making an extinct type of giant locust causing havoc on farms through the United States. The plan by BioSyn was to have the giant locusts eat the crops that do not use BioSyn made pest controls. Dr Ellie Sattler is called into investigate. She contacts Dr Alan Grant to help her.

In the meantime, Owen and Claire are caught up in a drama of discovering Blue (the velociraptor from the first movie) has reproduced asexually and now has an offspring. Meanwhile, the cloned granddaughter of Jurassic World founder, Maisie Lockwood, is also living with Owen and Claire in hiding. However, Biosyn employees are out to kidnap Maisie and collect the offspring of Blue (dubbed "Beta") for the Biosyn research. From there, it becomes Owen and Claire's duty to bring both Maisie and Beta home.

I found that this movie was more grand on the scale of Jurassic World movies. The first movie was kept mostly to the Jurassic World theme park setting. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom expanded to a rescue plot on the dying island and expanded to the mansion setting. Whereas, Jurassic World: Dominion shows various worldwide settings. Media news reports were interspersed in the movie to keep the audience aware of the problems dinosaurs were causing humans. And the rescue of the main characters were also mixed in with Dr Wu's (played by BD Wong) brief redemption arc as well as the come uppance for the villains of the movie. There were some scenes that were a bit too violent and should not be seen by younger audiences. Although, overall, this movie wraps up well and would be well liked by anyone who is a fan of the Jurassic Park franchise.

B+ for the movie. The storyline was slightly stunted for the sake of entertainment purposes. But, this movie was probably the best of the trilogy. I do hope, however, that no more Jurassic Park/World movies are made.

UFOs

A French tv series about the investigations of GPAN a department of the
French space agency into UFOs.  It starts out in Kaoru in 1978 with the launch of a satellite called "Cristal".  Unfortunately, it fails on liftoff.  It was run by Didier Mathure and his ex-wife Élise Conti.  His career ruined he is sidelined to head GPAN, an apparent joke department dedicated to investigating UFOs, it consists of Marcel, Vera and Remy.  The problem is, Didier treats it as serious.  He investigates UFOs for real.  Through a series of investigations he comes to the attention of Commandant Valérie Delbrosse of French Army Intelligence.  She tells him to stop investigating, which of course he ignores.  He becomes ensared in trying to find more.  I'll leave watchers to discover what else occurs but it's good watch.

I'd give this 8 out 10 to watch on SBS Ondemand.

Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan

I watched this on DVD last night for the first time in a while. This 2019 war film is actually quite entertaining, considering the Australian films are not known for their fast pace action scenes. This movie has a build-up in pace and then the action really takes off for much of the movie.

The story starts off with Major Smith (Travis Fimmel) having trouble keeping order in his troops. When the base comes under a mortar attack, Smith is irritated that the soldiers at the base are more interested in playing cards or having beers than defending themselves from the attack.

The next day, having detected the attack coming from Long Tan, 4 companies set out for the area to flank the VietCong soldiers alleged to be in the area. However, upon finding the enemy, it is not long before the Australian soldiers are outmanned and outgunned by the VC. With precision strikes by the bombardiers, the company manages to hold off the VC and wait for reinforcement and regrouping.

Much of the story relies on Major Smith needing to reconcile with the fact that his commanding officers were more concerned about an attack on headquarters than what the soldiers in the field were facing. Conflicts arose with air commanders making the decision to resupply the soldiers in the field. Whereas the APC commanders had to race against time to rescue the remaining soldiers in their last stand. Brigadier Jackson appears to play the role of a reluctant commander making decisions that seem very defensive and selfish in terms of priority.

The battle scenes are very good. Sometimes, they seem a little overdramatic in places. And the nationalism of the troops borderlines on jingoism. But, the scenes show a good war setting depicting a battle that will leave an audience squirming in their seats.

Rating: B.

Long Tan over-dramatises for the cinema audience some of the effects and minimises some of the real effects.  The Australian troops sheltered in a "slight dip" in the ground, not a bloody great ditch.  There was no hut in the middle of the battleground and they didn't show the 155mm guns which were present at Nui Dat which contributed significantly to the battle.  Admittedly and I was pleased to see the Italian 105mm guns being used by Kiwi gunners which were there.  The M113s were correct, except one had the external fuel tanks around the rear ramp which wasn't correct, they obviously made do with what they could find in the army's inventory.  Overall not a bad effort apart from the minor nit picks.  It, along with "Odd Angry Shot" are perhaps the two best Vietnam War movies around IMHO.  Both have realism problems but they are still more realistic than most Septic efforts. Smiley

I thought Major Smith was being a bit too brave in some places and a bit too overdramatic in others. Private Large was a real concern. It seemed like he knew better than what he was. But, he became more of a problem through the drama than necessary.

I have a book on Vietnam from an Australian's point of view. The author is Paul Ham. There is another book about the place that I need to look at again. The only Vietnam War history book that I have read thoroughly was based on American perspectives. They do not seem to reference the Battle of Long Tan. Author Hugh Lunn did a tour with the American Marines in Vietnam. He was the photojournalist who watched battles take place. His account of the war was very good.
