"Last Stop Larrimah" is a much watch movie on Netflix.     It is best described as a movie/doco type of screening that starts slowly but builds up to a great end.     Typical Aussie outback movie where life revolves around the Pub in a dying town, with the usual cross section of people from the town upperclass (bogans in diamonds) to the town drunk.    I found it a good movie, and have actually driven through the town a few times as well as having stayed at the "Pink Panther Pub".

Australian Epic - an ABC tv series which turns recent events to music and dance.  It covers Steve Bradbury's Olympic Gold Medal (won by being last when the rest of the field collides and crashes), Princess Mary (an ordinary Australian marries a Danish Prince and becomes a Princess in the process), "Pistol and Boo", Johnny Depp's pet dogs that he tries to smuggle into Australia without quarantining them, Cheville Corby a would be drug smuggler who gets caught in Bali, Tampa, the infamous MV Tampa and it's load of wayward refugees.  All are told factually, the song and dance are imaginative and often quite catchy.  Each of the cast takes on a major role in turn and it includes Andrew Hansen from the Chaser.  Well worth watching because it places these events in context, context often lost. 9 out of 10.

Such a depressing movie. A child getting abandoned to basically look after herself. An accusation of murder. Living a remote lifestyle. I wish that movie was never made.

Spotswood aka The Efficiency Expert - starring Anthony Hopkins, Ben Mendelsohn, Alwyn Kurts, Bruno Lawrence, John Walton, Rebecca Rigg, Toni Collette, Russell Crowe, Angela Punch McGregor, Dan Wyllie, John Flaus, Jeff Truman all giving masterly performances many in their first major roles.  It is the story of an efficiency experts, with Edgar Wallace called in to look at how Balls a Moccasin Factory situated in the Melbourne suburb of Spotswood can be brought up to speed and actually make real profits.  Before this, Mr. Ball has been selling his assets to hide that he has been making a loss.  Played by old time actor Alwyn Kurts, Mr. Ball, treats his staff benevolently and believes in the dignity of their work over their efficiency.  Carey is a young man who is detailed to help Mr. Wallace prepare his report.  Wallace finds himself drawn into the private lives of the employees around him.  He takes part in the slot car championship and enjoys it.  He decides that rather than sack everybody he can do something else and use their expertise to make something of the factory.  Well worth watching, I'd rate this 8 out of 10, if for nothing else to see Russel Crowe in his first starring role, alone with Toni Collette as well as greats like Angela Punch McGregor and Bruno Lawrence  and Alwyn Kurts.

I did watch Oppenheimer. The movie was more about whether Oppenheimer was a trustworthy person, given his associations with Communists. I fell asleep at one stage, and left to go to the toilet at another stage. I probably missed as much as 15 minutes of the movie. But, if I did not see it in the other 2 hours 30 minutes, it probably was not mentioned.

Watched Oppenheimer yesterday.

I agree, it is mainly about the political intrigue during the J. Edgar Hoover anti-Commie era than it is about the bomb.

3 hours sounded a bit long but it went by fairly quickly.

I liked the way they kind of "reversed" the method of using Black and White footage. This time using black and white in the more recent events rather than the older events which they used colour for.

Robert Downey Jr. did a very good job in his role.

The guy they picked for Oppenheimer was very good too, a very good likeness.

I was interested to see Tom Conti as Einstein too.

I remember he did a very good job in Merry Christmas Mr. LawrenceCool

Not too bad a movie but those wanting more in-depth history on the bomb might be disappointed.

I thought it was a good movie as well.  It could have included a "wee" break for us Seniors though!   I have downloaded it to watch again on a rainy day and I also enjoyed seeing Tom Conti in a good role.    His Daughter Nina Conti is quite well known on the Comedy Circuit here in Melbourne.     She uses hand controlled face masks of various types on volunteers from the audience and, together with a very well hone voice projection technique, can absolutely destroy someone on stage.

Ahhh yes! We watched that movie a few years back.

A very interesting plot indeed! What was it REALLY about though? Accepting change? I don’t think so. I think it was more about how we navigate our acceptance of the INEVITABILITY OF CHANGE.

Oh! I didn't catch that she was Tom's daughter. Spotted her on ABC breakfast today but didn't realise who it was.  Smiley

Well ... last night we watched Wog Boys Forever.

It’s classified as a Comedy on Foxtel’s movie channel.

I (personally) found it hard to laugh though. Some very interesting and serious home truths were scattered throughout the plot which I found somewhat confronting. It’s not always easy looking back in life when you’ve been a victim of racism.

Some scars (the invisible deep seated ones) just never heal. You quietly acknowledge their existence from time to time in unguarded moments when you reflect back on some aspect of your childhood.

Anyway ... Vince Colosimo - what a heart throb. And he so reminds me of my late dad.

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp is a 1943 British romantic-war film written, produced and directed by the British film-making team of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. It stars Roger Livesey, Deborah Kerr and Anton Walbrook. The title derives from the satirical Colonel Blimp comic strip by David Low, but the story is original. One film critic has described it as "England's greatest film ever".  I wouldn't go so far but it talks about an England that even then was dying out.  Deborah Kerr plays three roles, first as Edith Hunter, then as Livesay's wife, Barbara Wynne and finally as "Johnnie" Angela Cannon, who is Candy's MTC driver.  Theo, Candy's German friend is struck by her resemblance to his dead wife, Edith.  Anyway, it all begins as a flash back as "Spud" Wilson, Angela's boyfriend tries to capture General Wynne-Candy at the Royal Bathing club.  Wynne-Candy grabs him and submerges him in the bath with him and remembers how he met Theo his German friend and the trials and tribulations over the decades.  Overall, a wonderful movie, even if they do use American trucks.  Interesting it features John Laurie, whom you'd recognise as the dour, pessimistic Private Frazer from Dads' Army.  I'd give this film 9 out of 10, well worth watching.

Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb a Black and white exploration of what could have happened if a lone SAC Wing Commander does his block and decides to wage nuclear war on the Soviet Union.   The commander General Jack D. Ripper, believes there is an ongoing Soviet plot to take over the West through subterfuge by polluting our, "precious bodily fluids" through the mass fluoridation of our water supplies.  Wing Commander Lionel Mandrake is his executive officer who smells a rat and confronts him in his office.  He locks them both in and produces a pistol and threatens Mandrake with it.  Most of the action centres around Major Kong, the pilot of a B-52 which has been sent to bomb the USSR and the Presidential War Room under the Pentagon where the President attempts to defuse the situation.  The Soviet Ambassador is invited in and reveals that the Soviets now posses a Doomsday Device which is intended to destroy the remnants of humanity if the Soviets are destroyed. Well worth watching.  Peter Sellers plays multiple roles, as the President, Lionel Mandrake and Dr. Strangelove.  He was also to play the role of Kong but sprained his ankle during filming and they go Slim Pickens in to play that role.   10 out of 10, one of Kubrik's best. Foreign Correspondent is a 1940 American black-and-white spy thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock. It tells the story of an American reporter based in Britain who tries to expose enemy spies involved in a fictional continent-wide conspiracy in the prelude to World War II. It stars Joel McCrea and features 19-year-old Laraine Day, Herbert Marshall, George Sanders, Albert Basserman, and Robert Benchley, along with Edmund Gwenn.  It has the usual Hitchcock build up of tension and is well worth watching.  It reflects a America still unsure about the possibility of war with Europe in the way it treats Fisher, the master spy and the circumstances of his death, far too noble for a Nazi. 9 out of 10.  Smiley
