Nothing unusual about converting to Islam it’s a religion like any other, unknowns do it all the time and so do celebrities, Lindsay Lohan is just about there I think.
Before Islam was demonized by the 9/11 attacks it was quietly popular.
Most muslims who practice Islam are peaceful people like you and me, the rogues, murders and mercenaries who teach the most violent parts of that religion are no different to Christians who exercise the old law in the bible like stoning your wife to death if she strayed, wasn’t that long ago we burnt witches, and lets not forget the likes of Charles Manson and others who talked with god.
As for me I’m quite happy to be an orthodox Christian, I can rock up to church 10, 20, 30, or 50 years later and the priest won’t say to me where have you been bla bla bla.
Islam was never "quietly popular". People's interest in that religion was only through prison conversions, when Muslim fundamentalists serving time for raping infidel girls would try and convert other prisoners (particularly black Americans) into joining Islam. Of course, in the USA, the Nation of Islam seemed quite popular for black youth in the 1960s to the new century. But, having met some members of NoI, they seem to be okay people. The issue is that there might be some factional issues of criminal youths joining to look cool/rebellious among their peers. Whereas, NoI seems to have an agenda to segregate themselves away from non-Islamic society. Though I don't know enough about them to make a reasonable opinion on the matter.
I think I digressed enough on that last paragraph. As far as I am concerned, converts seem to be going to Islam for the sake of rebellion. They want to make a point about rebelling against the general way society works, but want to do it in a way that politically correct social justice warriors will accept and try to justify/validate. In the meantime, Muslims seem to be committing apostasy in non-Muslim majority countries rather considerably more frequently than non-Muslims are converting to Islam. I guess the Muslims that commit apostasy are just coming to terms with the fact that they don't want to be part of a culture that severely hinders their opportunities.
Sinead O'Connor's choice is obviously one of rebellion to her former religion. She will understand in time that no one really cares about her life choice. And then she will quietly fade out of public life for the sake of her own safety. I doubt Islamic fanatics really give a damn about her.
