I am not an exception, most of the people I worked with have done as well or even better then I did. The trick is no trick at all, a combination of delayed gratification, tax differing as much income as can be afforded and not having multiple divorces. Living within or even below your means is a great way to save for the future.

We offer everyone, even the children of people in our Country illegally twelve years of free education, fourteen if you count pre-k and kindergarten. The problem isn't that it isn't enough to be successful in life but that it isn't used to a larger potential. At the age of eighteen you can enter into contracts and vote, starting life as an independent adult shouldn't be delayed four or more years unless it is used to earn a real specialized skill. Most of the disabled and handicapped are capable of some level of employment and if given a chance they will feel their lives have more meaning than if they collect a check for breathing and watching television all day. The ill-educated and substance dependent? Everyone can be useful and at least try to improve their lot in life if they choose. If not, we shouldn't have to support them. A little hunger may motivate most!

I feel any Citizen or "Legal" long term resident of my Country should be able to own any type of firearm they desire. Those incapable of functioning at a responsible level should not be allowed to become examples of what restrictions the rest of us have to live under. The people who choose to take a firearm and become mass murderers and survive their rampage should be quickly charged, tried, convicted and executed within months of their crime. Examples of people who harm or kill others in their communities have been covered endlessly here and elsewhere!

Most disabled people are just that" disabled either mentally or physically or both. What morty is saying is that everyone can be a slave to capitalism and if your disabled a slave for much lower wages. morty torty knows all about not being successful in life. We are, it appears wandering off the purpose of the topic, Mort.

An excellent formula but one which few it appears Americans actually follow.  Why would that be?  Could it be because they are not taught to shoulder their responsibilities and instead seek to just enjoy their rights without any consequences?

As Marla has indicated that is not necessarily true, Mort.

Downunder, we offer our citizens and long-term residents access to free education from Kindergarten until Year 12 for "free" (in theory, in practice it usually costs considerable money to parents to educate their children in state run schools).  Our state run schools are suffering from a lack of money because politicians are making sure that students go to private run schools - for a reason.  Education is seen as a key but it has to be the right sort of education according to conservative politicians.  Free education is associated with Socialism, so they starve the state run system of funds and then they wonder why parents move their kids to private schools...

We also used to offer free University education from the 1970s until the late 1980s.  Then a student loan system was introduced.  I was lucky and was educated under the free system until the end of my Masters.   Today, it has become much, much worse.   Politicians don't like spending money it appears on anything other than their private pork barrel projects.

Disabled or handicapped people are at a severe disadvantage in most societies around the world because of neglect and a lack of money.  Yes, a job would be best but too few employers make an effort to employ handicapped people, either here or over there in the USA.  At least here, they receive a government benefit.  Over there they are part of the working poor...

What you feel is largely immaterial, Mort.  It is what the majority of Americans feel and what they feel is that gun reform is overdue.  The NRA has been sticking it's fingers in the dyke for far too long and holding back sensible firearms reforms.   Firearms are dangerous tools.  People who own firearms should be required to demonstrate that they can own and use their firearms safely.  The types of firearms should be limited to those that are useful for hunting - bolt action rifles and double-barrelled shotguns - pistols for target shooting and nothing more.   Too many gun nuts have access to semi-automatic longarms and pump-action shotguns.  They use them to settle arguments and to take their revenge on society.  The end result is a butchers' bill which no society can sustain.  American society is like living in a war zone.   It needs to be curbed - badly.   Roll Eyes

.........The people who choose to take a firearm and become mass murderers and survive their rampage should be quickly charged, tried, convicted and executed within months of their crime..........

For the most part, I completely agree........I don't believe non-citizens should be afforded any Rights or protections through the Constitution's Second Amendment........& the time period for execution should be no more than 24 weeks, rather than effectively unlimited months.

The US Supreme Court has decided in Heller that the Second Amendment acknowledges, protects, & defends an individual citizens Right to Keep & Bear Firearms, without requiring them to be part of any Militia.

The Right to Keep & Bear Arms allows law-abiding citizens to exercise their fundamental Right of Self-Protection, in the manner that best suits their needs......& the Freedom to choose which best suits them is their Right, & not the Government's to decide.

There are therefore only two (2) ways then to place a ban on firearms........Reversal of Heller by the Supreme Court, & a Repeal of the Second Amendment, replacing it with a 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution.

I would wholeheartedly applaud efforts by the Anti-Second Amendment mob to submit, pass, & then send such a change of the US Constitution to the States for Ratification by the People.

I firmly believe that nothing will solidify support for the Second Amendment in the hearts & minds of the American People, like a fight to repeal it......& with it their Natural Rights!

After all is debated, both pro & con, the US Constitution is the People's Document, not the Government's, & it is up to the People, & the People alone, to change it.......to reject or defend their own Rights.......their Natural Right to Self-Defense.   Wink

The SCOTUS is wrong.

The Second Amendment does require Americans to be part of a "well regulated Militia."  Anything less is a betrayal of the US Constitution.    Roll Eyes

Sez who......you??......  Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin  a no account, less-than-nobody, without any more than a say as you already have proclaimed on a forum...........while the decisions of the United States Supreme Court, who say otherwise, is the Law of the Land, & who's decision is not subject to any appeal by any lower court in America.

The only superior deciding body in America is the collective deciding votes of the American People, in 3/4's of the 50 United States, 38 States, who ratify to, or repeal any portion of, THEIR Constitution.   Wink

A Majority of American States is not enough.......America is not a Democracy.....it's a Constitutional Republic. Wink

Only One in Five Americans Wants
the Second Amendment to be Repealed

Source:
THE WASHINGTON POST
       Quote:
One consequence of the success of the National Rifle Association's expansive gun-rights agenda — and its lobbying power in Congress — is that groups favoring more gun control have pared down their ambitions in recent years.

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, for instance, no longer talks about banning handguns. Advocates have moved away from the term “gun control” in favor of more specific language like “gun violence” and “gun safety.” Democratic leaders in Congress have grown timid about proposing significant new restrictions on gun ownership.

In that context it's a bit of a jolt to read an op-ed published Tuesday by retired Supreme Court justice John Paul Stevens titled “Repeal the Second Amendment.” Stevens is something of an expert on the issue, having considered the proper scope of the Second Amendment in the 2008 case District of Columbia v. Heller.

In his op-ed, Stevens praises the work of the March for Our Lives organizers and urges the group to “seek more effective and more lasting reform” via a “repeal of the Second Amendment.” He calls the Second Amendment a “relic of the 18th century,” concerned more with the balance of power between the states and the federal government than with individual gun rights.

But public-opinion polling shows that it would take a lot of persuading to bring the public around to that view.

In February, for instance, the Economist and YouGov asked Americans whether they supported a repeal of the Second Amendment.

Twenty-one percent said they favored such a proposal, compared with 60 percent in opposition.......

Million Plus NJ Gun Owners Defy State Law, Refuse to Turn Over Banned Gun Mags

Over one million New Jersey Gun owners defy Governor Murphy's gun magazine ban & turn in demands of what some estimate is easily more than ten million now illegal standard capacity gun mags

Source:
Ammoland
       Quote:
New Jersey's standard capacity magazine ban is now in effect making New Jersey's one million gun owners criminals in the eyes of the state. But in an act of mass definace, New Jersey residents refuse to comply.

Any magazine holding more than ten rounds is now illegal in the Garden State. The standard magazine for an AR-15 holds 30 rounds. Glock 19s, which is the most popular pistol in the United States, holds 15 rounds. Anyone who is possession of larger magazine is committing a fourth-degree felony.
Anyone caught with one of the now banned magazines in their possession faces up to 18 months in prison and up to $10,000 in fines or both for each magazine found.

The bill was signed into law last June by Gov. Phil Murphy (D). Residents had until December 11th, 2018, to turn over magazines to police or sell or store them out of state.

Pro-gun groups sued New Jersey to try to prevent the law from going into effect. Their attempt on blocking the law failed in a federal appeals court. The three-judge panel ruled that a law limiting the number of rounds a magazine holds did not violate the US Constitution and did not put an undue burden on New Jersey gun owners.

“New Jersey’s law reasonably fits the State’s interest in public safety and does not unconstitutionally burden the Second Amendment’s right to self-defense in the home,” the court wrote in their decision. “The law also does not violate the Fifth Amendment’s Takings Clause because it does not require gun owners to surrender their magazines but instead allows them to retain modified magazines or register firearms that have magazines that cannot be modified.”

AG Gurbir Grewal applauded the ruling on Twitter stating: “This just in: for months, individuals have been challenging NJ’s limits on large capacity magazines—a sensible law to address mass shootings. Today, the court of appeals upheld the law. Big win for public safety and law enforcement safety!”

Residents of New Jersey on various message boards have called the magazine ban unenforceable. Some were going as far as laughing at Gov. Murphy and his attempt at regulating magazine size.

New Jersey is not saying how they plan to enforce the ban on standard capacity magazines. Gov. Murphy's office referred AmmoLand to the New Jersey Attorney General's office. The AG's office refused comment.

Sharon Lauchaire, Director of Communications for the Office the Attorney General told AmmoLand: “We do not discuss law enforcement strategies.”

AmmoLand's sources within the New Jersey State Police that spoke on a condition of anonymity stated that they had not received any guidance on how to enforce the ban from the AG’s office. They said that there is currently no plan to investigate gun owners suspected of having the now banned magazines.

According to the source, the plan that has been discussed among officers is only to file charges against people who are guilty of other crimes. This plan might change once superiors give guidance on how to enforce the ban.

AmmoLand reached out to several local police departments in New Jersey to see how they plan on enforcing the ban and what the turn in numbers have been? Much like the New Jersey State Police, none of these departments have a concrete plan on how to proactively enforce the ban & none had a single report of magazines turned over.

AmmoLand also asked the Governor's office what Gov. Murphy thinks of users on the internet saying that the ban is unenforceable & laughing at the Governor's attempt at regulating magazine sizes.

Gov. Murphy & his office refused to comment on these gun owner's opinions.

AmmoLand also asked Gov. Murphy's office about the number of magazines turned in by New Jersey residents. Once again AmmoLand was referred to the New Jersey Attorney General's office.

In this case, Lauchaire would not offer a comment and referred AmmoLand to the New Jersey State Police. Lauchaire stated she was aware of AmmoLand's previous inquire to the State Police on the number of magazines turned in meaning that State Police contacted the AG’s office about our request for information.

The New Jersey State Police have not officially responded to our request on the number of magazines that were turned over by citizens.

Two sources from within the State Police, who spoke to AmmoLand on condition of anonymity, told AmmoLand News that they both do not know of any magazines turned over to their agency & doubted that any were turned in. They also stated that the State Police also engaged the AG's office for guidance on how to respond to inquiries such as ours. They were unaware if the Attorney General has returned to their request for guidance.

All the local police departments that AmmoLand contacted stated that they have not had any magazines turned into them...

Just because the government makes a law does not always mean it's right.

They are criminals and deserve to be treated as criminals and suffer the full force of the law.   Criminals who are not undertaking "civil disobedience", they are breaking the law as passed through the legislature of the state of New Jersey.   If they don't like that law, they should remove the government that passed it, at the next election.    Roll Eyes
