Oregon Child Sex Ring Uncovered: “They’re Worth $5000 A Night”

Investigators in Oregon have discovered a massive child sex ring in which children were sold as sex slaves to high ranking pedophiles for as much as $5,000 a night.


Curry County residents Genevieve Wilson and Jackalene Antunes say they are working to help child victims of human trafficking in Southern Oregon, with very little help from the government.

Currypilot.com reports: Soroptimist International, of which Wilson is a member, is trying to educate the public that it’s not just a Third World occurrence, while Antunes, the director of Wally’s House in Gold Beach, interviews children in abusive situations with an ear now fine-tuned to the lingo of the sexually abused.

“One thing that always shocks people is that they get hold of these kids — the target group is boys aged 11 to 13 and 10- to 14-year-old girls,” Wilson said.

“There’s not as much money in drugs anymore as there is in human trafficking. They take a young child and on a good night, can make $3,000 to $5,000.”

Coercion and ‘love’

The young kids are often befriended by a man — although incidences involving women exist, as well — who eventually bring them in under their control.

They reassure a child’s insecurities, drive a wedge between them and friends and family, buy them clothes and ultimately bring them into the underworld of illegal sex trafficking. They keep the children there using threats and abuse.

“I moved her way out in the country or to another city,” one trafficker admitted on the Rebecca Bender Initiative website, where a Grants Pass trafficking victim is trying to educate people about the problem.

“At first, I felt excited to be in a new adventure, a new town,” his survivor said. “After a while, I felt I had no one to turn to, nowhere to go.”

The tale is common.

“He even controlled who I called on my cell,” another victim wrote. “I felt sick to my stomach as he read my text messages wondering if the smallest thing would tick him off.”

Or, “I threatened to hurt people she loved,” one abuser admitted. “And, I knew he was capable of this. The abuse was a small price to pay to keep them safe.”

The children themselves lie to their parents, are reported as runaways or suddenly disappear.

Sexual predators then use the internet — it leaves no paper trail and any action derived from it is more difficult to prosecute in court — to lure adults to hotel rooms for sexual acts with minors. They’re becoming more mobile, too, using campers and parking at large festivals at which they send the children out to lure in customers.

“It’s the oldest way people have made money,” Antunes said. “The sad thing is, the victims keep getting younger. People watch to have a child sexually abused on the internet.”

If a child tries to run away and is captured, they are often branded on the hand, between thumb and first finger, a lingering reminder of who “owns” them and the punishment to follow if they try to escape again.

“It’s everywhere,” Wilson said. “We’re trying to save lives here.”

While Atunes looks for clues in their speech, stories and body language, she is also close to having Wally’s House certified so physicians can physically evaluate possible victims to determine if they have been sexually assaulted.

Wilson and Antunes hope to bring a presentation to local schools to spread awareness of the problem, which is increasing across the United States. As in the illegal drug trade, Interstate 5 is a common travel route for traffickers, but Highway 101 is another.

Wally’s house, at 94166 Eighth St. in Gold Beach, is a non-profit organization that takes tips from law enforcement, teachers and others that a child might be in trouble at home or with relatives nearby. Through forensic interviewing techniques, they can determine if a child is being abused and needs to enter the foster care system, or even groomed by someone to hit the streets as a sex worker.

“It’s a family business in a lot of ways,” Antunes said.

“Unfortunately, a lot of children don’t know,” Wilson concurred. “They might have an aunt bring them in (to the sex trade).”

The horror stories abound. Increasingly, so do the stories of survivors.

The Rebecca Bender Initiative in Grants Pass offers hope to those who want out — if they can get out.

The number of victims — many of them not yet teenagers — are often too scared to talk to authorities. They might be too scared to talk to their parents — and in some cases, their parents are the perpetrators.

With budget cuts at the state and county levels, Josephine County was forced to close its Southern Oregon High Tech Crimes Force three years ago, and as of six months ago, didn’t have any detectives specializing in sex crimes. Medford has three who address sex crimes; of those, one deals in human trafficking.

According to Wilson, a woman named Ella Smillie — she doesn’t know if that’s her real name — has a bounty on her head as a sex trafficking survivor who has brought the issue into the national domain.

More than 1 million children, according to the International Labour Organization, are exploited each year in the commercial sex trade. IndyStar columnist Tim Swarens, through the support of a Society of Professional Journalists fellowship, spent more than a year investigating a lucrative business where children are abused with low risk to buyers or traffickers, despite tougher laws and heightened international awareness of the scourge. Google, Eli Lilly and Co., and Indiana Wesleyan University provided additional support for this project.

This is the first of 10 columns in the EXPLOITED series, which explores the cultural and economic forces that contribute to commercial sexual exploitation.

On the day she met Marcus Thompson, the girl later told the FBI, she had been ready to leap from a bridge to end her life.

She was only 15, pregnant and alone on the streets.

And in this wounded child, Thompson saw a means to make money. He promised that if she left her small Illinois town with him, he would make her a model. Grasping for hope, she climbed into his truck.

But the promise was a lie.

Instead, in the summer of 2015, Thompson and his wife, Robin, forced the girl on a nightmarish six-week trek across the southern United States. Photographed in suggestive poses and marketed online, she was sold out of hotel rooms and truck stops to any man with the money and the desire to buy sex.

The justice system eventually would work well in this case in several respects. The victim was rescued and provided with treatment. The traffickers who exploited her were caught, pleaded guilty and were sent to prison.

But what of the men who paid to rape this child? What consequences did they suffer?

Not a single one was ever charged.

That same breach of justice is the norm in thousands of trafficking cases. About 10,000 children a year suffer the horrors of commercial sexual exploitation in the United States. Each victim on average is forced to have sex more than five times a day.

Yet the buyers who fuel the child sex trade are seldom held accountable. Most just blend back into their families, jobs and neighborhoods. Until the next time.

In the Thompson case, the victim, too young for a driver’s license, told the FBI she was beaten once for attempting to escape and was threatened with being “thrown to the alligators” if she tried to run again. Marcus Thompson, according to federal authorities, raped the girl five times.

Still, the child retained enough independence to say no when a buyer demanded anal sex. But her refusal came at a brutal price. The man who bought her complained to the man who sold her. And she was beaten again.

At a hospital in St. Louis, the abuse finally ended when the girl was identified as a sex-trafficking victim. The Thompsons, based on her descriptions, were arrested.

Marcus Thompson is now serving a life sentence. Robin Thompson, who helped place the online ads and book the hotel rooms, was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

At Robin Thompson’s sentencing, Chief U.S. District Judge Michael Reagan described the couple’s crimes as among the worst he had seen in 16 years on the federal bench.

In her victim impact letter, read by Reagan at the sentencing, the girl wrote, “It’s hard to wake up every day and remember the people I had sex with.”



In the past 16 months, I’ve witnessed the worst of human behavior while reporting for this project, one that’s taken me across eight countries on five continents. I’ve talked to 6-year-old trafficking victims, visited a shelter where the oldest survivors were only 11, met a 5-year-old boy living with his parents in a squalid brothel in India and interviewed survivors who were raped by hundreds of men.

Yet the ordeal of that one child from Illinois — beaten for saying no — has haunted me in particular.

It’s stuck in my mind because it exposes a harsh truth: In the sex trade, buyers and sellers view the children they torment as property.

And property cannot say no.

This project began with a question: Who buys a 15-year-old child for sex?

The answer: Many otherwise ordinary men. They could be your co-worker, doctor, pastor or spouse.

“They’re in all walks of life,” a 17-year-old survivor from the Midwest, trafficked when she was 15, said about the more than 150 men who purchased her in a month. “Some could be upstanding people in the community. It was mostly people in their 40s, living in the suburbs, who were coming to get the stuff they were missing.”

Catholics Mobilize for Huge Protest Against Black Mass in Houston

During the protest, faithful Catholics prayed the rosary and also chanted "Reparation, reparation, reparation!'

“This is something big,” said one Catholic protester, “I‘ve never seen anything like this before!”

He was not the only one to sense that something very important was happening. A great clash was taking place in the heavens. The atmosphere was charged with prayers of reparation and petition against a blasphemous Black Mass in Houston. The forces of evil also seemed unleashed, creating great tension.

Despite the short notice, indignant Catholics mobilized. Near the site of the blasphemy,  protesters just kept coming and coming. Soon they lined the sidewalk and spread out along the street until they appeared like an overwhelming force of nearly 150 prayer warriors. A statue of Our Lady of Fatima presided as the queen of the event.  On the other side of the street, some ten lone counter-protesters stood shouting defiantly.

“We seemed to be hundreds,” said one participant. “I felt the special protection of heaven as we prayed.”

The object of the protest could not have been more terrible. At Houston’s Brash Brewery, pro-abortion Satanists of the Satanic Temple joined with the brewery to co-sponsor an “evening with the beast,” which ended with a public Black Mass. The promoters made every effort to offend promising “excellent blasphemy”  and a new line of “Black Masses” beer.

The November 23 protest was organized jointly by Tradition, Family, Property—Texas, and the American Society for the Defense of Tradition Family and Property. The latter’s university outreach program, TFP Student Action, circulated a petition asking Brash Brewing Company to cancel this “direct attack against God.” Local TFP-Texas supporters Hector and Elvia Leyva joined with America Needs Fatima Rosary Rally captain Karen Pomes in organizing the late afternoon rally of reparation and protest near the brewery. The mother and brother of the owner of the brewery were at the TFP protest and attended the Mass of reparation celebrated that evening. They are not even Catholic but grieved over the sin being promoted by a family member.

“I have never seen Catholics pray with such fervor during a protest,” reported TFP-Texas Vice President Celso Costa, who led the rosary of reparation. “Everyone was serious and focused upon rejecting the abomination that was to take place.”

Those on the street were not the only ones participating in the acts of reparation and protest. Several convents of nuns agreed to pray for those at the rally.  Annunciation Catholic Parish and Regina Caeli Parish in Houston held  Holy Hours of Reparation and rosaries from 11:00 p.m. through 1:00 a.m., the time scheduled for the Satanic event. Three other parishes also held adoration and prayer vigils. Hundreds of Catholics attended these services with devotion and ardor.

At the time of the actual blasphemy, TFP members joined a group of twenty students in front of the brewery for rosaries of reparation. Nothing could diminish the fervor and zeal of these university-age men who made their strong manly voices heard in the early morning hours. 

"I don’t think they expected such a large turnout,” Elvia Leyva said. “I only wish we would have had more time to organize something much bigger.”

The Satanic event was designed to offend Catholics. The organizers sold 50 so-called “Cult” tickets for $666, which gave the purchaser admission to the Black Mass and a black robe for the ritual. A Black Mass usually involves the hideous desecration of a consecrated host. The Satanic Temple’s Houston branch tweeted that a consecrated host was “defiled, destroyed and swept into the trash where it belongs.”

Whenever Catholics mobilize against these events, they expose them as expressions of hatred toward God and the Catholic Church. Businesses, institutions and individuals have withdrawn sponsorship. At times, Satanists have canceled their events.  As happened in Houston, the Satanists are forced to announce their events at short notice to get in under the radar.

The massive protest of faithful Catholics is the best way to prevent Satanism from entering the mainstream of American life. If Catholics resist, the Blessed Mother will bless their efforts. Houston knows this is true: the nearby Church of Lucifer closed its doors in 2017 after a TFP protest in which Catholics took a stand and prayed.
