Australia's economy in recession per capita
Mar 6th, 2019 at 11:14am

Australia's economy just entered recession on a per capita basis

Quote:
Australia has just recorded its second straight quarter where the economy shrank on a per capita basis.

Removing the impact of population growth from fourth quarter GDP figures, the economy declined by 0.2 per cent in the three months to the end of the year, following a 0.1 per cent decline in the three months to September.

Including population growth does not make the picture much rosier, with the economy growing at just 0.2 per cent over the fourth quarter.

The weak result dragged down Australia's economic growth last year to 2.3 per cent, well below the Reserve Bank's optimistic call of 2.8 per cent and beneath even the more pessimistic analyst forecasts.

It also shows a dramatic slowdown over the course of last year, with annualised growth over the second half of the year coming in at 1 per cent, compared with the brisk 4 per cent in the opening months.

"Growth in the economy was subdued, reflecting soft household spending and a decline in dwelling investment," ABS chief economist Bruce Hockman said.

"The approvals for dwelling construction indicate that the decline in dwelling investment will continue."

GDP per capita has been slipping away for years. That productivity genie just won't stay in the bottle. If it takes more labour and capital to produce the same output just what were you expecting.

Shorten / Bowen are going to fast-track a larger downturn in house prices because of their stupid Negative gearing policy.

It will cause an over-supply of housing stock, leading to a downturn in the general economy.

A recession will result.

House price falls could feed into the wider economy: Lowe

Falling house prices could slow the overall economy, Reserve Bank governor Philip Lowe has conceded while arguing there were still positive signs a strong jobs market will underpin the nation over the next year.

Speaking at the AFR Business Summit in Sydney on Wednesday, the governor said the main factors behind the sharp run-up in house prices in Sydney and Melbourne over recent years were a surge in population and a lack of supply of new residential dwellings.

Prices were now correcting because supply had caught up with demand.

A Recession will be good to bring our HYPER-INFLATION back down to earth. Australia has become an over-priced piece of crap since 2000AD.

Good example in one part of NSW.
Workers crying poor about being sacked from a Timber Mill saying "We Don't want to be sacked" publically for the sympathy vote.
But they will get there nice retrenchment packages and then start work at the new bigger and better Timber Mill about 50kms away.  Roll Eyes

In actual fact, it's a rerun of last time when labor came to power. The libs have stuffed the economy with their incompetence and labor will have to drag the country out of the sh*t again.

Nah, Bowen is going to retell the Keating: "This is the recession Australia had to have" speech, but with an even more supercilious expression.  Angry

Didn't the Libs have to do the same when the ALP went balls up?

Either way - both parties are incompetant these days, hence the growth of Independants rising.
Liberals have failed and Labor just can't lift its game.  Roll Eyes

Poor choice of words from Keating but essentially, he was on the money.

It isn't in a recession yet. Bowen / Shorty will cause it to get there though.

Correct. This recession killed off inflation as an economic problem in Australia.

Any recession in the next few months will be blamed on the Coalition. Do you really think the Coalition's stagnant wages are not having any effect?

of course it will be blamed on the COALition by Labor, that's par for the course.

The fact will be that Bowen / Shorty will have fast-tracked a recession with their stupid policies that deflate housing values, stifle consumer confidence and mug the wider economy.  Roll Eyes
