I would raise it to 21 these days with kids in a never ending bubble of schools until that age. Why would you exclude adult students from voting? Because most of them haven’t lived in the Real World, Worked or Paid Taxes or even thought for themselves.
If you were in the Military by that age that would be a different story.
The 26th Amendment came about because of specific events taking place with younger men specifically.
We were deep into a very unpopular war......the Vietnam War.
The draft was still in effect, & all young men attaining their 18th birthday were susceptible to being drafted.....trained for war......& forced to die for reasons most really didn't understand.
Prior to that magical/cursed birthday, most were just getting used to dealing with women, now they had to somehow deal with enemies they had no understanding of, going to a land they had no desire to visit, to be shot at & possibly/probably killed at every turn, & subject to all sorts of disease, & horrors imaginable. There were no true options, there were no exits they could use to escape this profound dilemma.
The voting age was 21, sure they could drink legally at 18, but they were being asked to forfeit their lives & have nothing to say about it......they couldn't vote on those that were sending them unwillingly to intense danger & possibly death. So to placate the electorate, the government thought giving these men young boys would make them feel better....more important.
I completely agree with 21 being the verge of maturity.....not there yet, but closer. The US Drinking age was increased to 21 because it was said, & proven, that 18 year olds were too immature & too irresponsible to take on alcohol, but all of a sudden 18 years old became mature enough to make decisions that could affect the entire future of the Country???
That's totally daft......but politics will always be politics....
IMHO.....21 should be both the drinking age (which in the US it is thank God.....should be here in Australia too), & 21 years old should also be the voting age.........it's a matter of maturity........50 years ago, 18 year olds were forced to mature earlier, but today, even the 21 year olds seem very reluctant to take on the process of life & reality.
