26th Amendment to the
United States Constitution

Quote:
Amendment XXVI (1971)

Section 1.

The right of citizens of the United States, who are 18 years of age or older, to vote, shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any state on account of age.

Section 2.

The Congress shall have the power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

● In order to change the voting age from 18 to 16, there would need to be an amendment/revision to the 26th Amendment to the United States Constitution.

The Constitutional Amendment Process
(link)
is traditionally set to a maximum of 7 years to complete, meaning from the time the proposed amendment is sent to the individual States for ratification by the People, each State has up to 7 years to complete the process, & report it's vote back to the US Congress.....

● If you are 17 years old, & will turn 18 by Election Day, you are permitted to
preregister to vote
in most all 50 States, & in some States you can even vote in the primaries for the Political Party you register in, prior to turning 18. If you register to vote as an Independent, you are not permitted to vote in any Party Primaries in almost all 50 States.  Wink

There have, in over 225 years of US History, been in excess of 11,000 Proposed Amendments to the United States Constitution...........of those only 33 were successfully passed by super-majority votes of each House of the Congress (US House of Representatives & the US Senate). Of those, only Twenty Seven Amendments were ratified by 3/4's (38) of the 50 States.....by the People.

Of over 11,000+ Proposed Amendments, & only 27 were ever successfully Ratified to become the Law of the Land in over 225 years. Wink

Somebody want to do the math?.......What are the overall odds of a proposal becoming a Ratified Amendment to the US Constitution?

Perhaps non-compulsory for 16-18.

I would raise it to 21 these days with kids in a never ending bubble of schools until that age.

Why would you exclude adult students from voting?

Because most of them haven’t lived in the Real World, Worked or Paid Taxes or even thought for themselves.

If you were in the Military by that age that would be a different story.

You could say the same about many politicians.

The 26th Amendment came about because of specific events taking place with younger men specifically.

We were deep into a very unpopular war......the Vietnam War.

The draft was still in effect, & all young men attaining their 18th birthday were susceptible to being drafted.....trained for war......& forced to die for reasons most really didn't understand.

Prior to that magical/cursed birthday, most were just getting used to dealing with women, now they had to somehow deal with enemies they had no understanding of, going to a land they had no desire to visit, to be shot at & possibly/probably killed at every turn, & subject to all sorts of disease, & horrors imaginable. There were no true options, there were no exits they could use to escape this profound dilemma.

The voting age was 21, sure they could drink legally at 18, but they were being asked to forfeit their lives & have nothing to say about it......they couldn't vote on those that were sending them unwillingly to intense danger & possibly death. So to placate the electorate, the government thought giving these men young boys would make them feel better....more important.

I completely agree with 21 being the verge of maturity.....not there yet, but closer. The US Drinking age was increased to 21 because it was said, & proven, that 18 year olds were too immature & too irresponsible to take on alcohol, but all of a sudden 18 years old became mature enough to make decisions that could affect the entire future of the Country???

That's totally daft......but politics will always be politics....

IMHO.....21 should be both the drinking age (which in the US it is thank God.....should be here in Australia too), & 21 years old should also be the voting age.........it's a matter of maturity........50 years ago, 18 year olds were forced to mature earlier, but today, even the 21 year olds seem very reluctant to take on the process of life & reality.

-20 = CHILD, KID, ETC

The Stupidity of Global and Australian Politics that it doesn't recognise the rights of a 19 year old to still enjoy it's 'YOUTH' of Childhood ...no wonder they are all slitting their wrists, etc because of the pressure to VOTE, HAVE SEX AND MORE.
