A crash involving a 2016 Tesla Model S in Davies, Florida this past Sunday proved deadly for the driver, reports Autoblog.com. The vehicle hit a tree and a fire started with the driver inside. According to reports, emergency responders were unable to rescue the driver.

The automatically deploying door handles on the outside don't appear to have deployed — the exterior handles on a Model S are electronically activated and remain flush with the door itself when not in use.

According to Tesla, "When an airbag inflates, the Model S unlocks all doors, the trunk, and extends all door handles."

The reports show that this didn´t happen as designed:: Witnesses said the airbags didn´t deflate, which prevented both the driver to escape and cut off quick access for the first responders.

During transport from the scene, the Model S reignited, which is also common for electric cars with damage to the battery.


Here's the statement that Autoblog.com received from Tesla:

"We are deeply saddened by this accident and our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy. We have reached out to the local authorities to offer our cooperation. We understand that speed is being investigated as a factor in this crash, and know that high speed collisions can result in a fire in any type of car, not just electric vehicles."

Is TESLA a DANGEROUS UNSAFE DEATH TRAP ???


The death rate in a tesla fire is 45%.

The death rate in an ICE is 0.25% you have a 1 in 2 chance of dying in a tesla fire vs a 1 in 400 chance in an ICE.

And why do only teslas catch fire vs any other EV's such as Leafs, Bolts Volts non of them catch fire.

It is because tesla uses 8000 thin wall cordless drill batteries.  Also let's not forget the electric doors would not open a serious design flaw that musk said could not happen.

An old-fashioned company like Mercedes Benz will test what happens in the case of a crash.

They used to say Mercedes buys back every crashed car, duno if that is true (maybe in Europe?).

But I remember reading how they engineer door handles to open in the case of a crash.

Not in 90% of crashes, or only crashes where the car's computers are still alive, but in every crash.

That is the difference between engineering and some slapdash battery sled that has an "autopilot" that kills cyclists and doors that can't be opened in a crash.

The problem is this was a design direction that, while feasible and highly marketable, was chosen in spite of likely evidence that showed increased risk of this very scenario.

Sure, Tesla won't volunteer the paper trail showing it, but this is exactly why other companies with comparable designs employ extreme, high-cost countermeasures (e.g. exploding bolts) to assuage the concern.

GM isn't cavalier enough to design anything on the Volt like this, and the point here is not to indict all EVs. Just some of Tesla's managerial decisions.

Panasonic operates in Tesla’s Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada.

Current and former employees at Panasonic’s battery-making operation inside Tesla’s Gigafactory said it’s a chaotic environment where standard operating procedures often go ignored and there are half a million pieces of scrap generated daily.

“Why do we throw away half a million batteries a day? Because people are slobs and the stuff’s not clean,” a former employee said. Panasonic sends about 3 million battery cells to Tesla every day.
Business Insider also reviewed internal documents, including some related to an oil spill that sent workers hunting for weeks through millions of battery cells to find potentially contaminated product.

Insiders have described a chaotic environment in Panasonic’s battery-making operation in the Nevada desert, one where standard operating procedures go ignored, expensive mistakes are born from carelessness, and half a million pieces of scrap are generated daily.

“I do not think that Tesla knows everything [that goes on on Panasonic’s side],” one former employee who left the company last year said. “It’s impossible to know everything. If Elon Musk was to know what was truly going on, he would flip his lid.”

Tesla and Panasonic share the Gigafactory, the massive manufacturing plant outside Reno, Nevada, built in 2016. At the Gigafactory, under the same roof, Panasonic makes cells for Tesla’s cars, and then Tesla turns the cells into batteries for its new Model 3 sedan. Tesla also makes the drive units for the Model 3 there.

Last week, Nikkei reported that Tesla and Panasonic would freeze plans to expand the Gigafactory. Tesla’s stock fell, while Panasonic’s rose after the news. Tesla responded by saying that both companies were still putting “substantial funds” into the Gigafactory, but that there’s more “output to be gained from improving existing production equipment.”

Tesla CEO Elon Musk called Panasonic’s production rate a “constraint on Model 3 output” that the company has known about since July.

Three current and former employees, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Business Insider that the operation scraps roughly half a million cells each day. Business Insider reviewed internal company documents, including some related to an oil spill that sent management scrambling for weeks to find potentially contaminated cells.

Together they tell a story of an operation that is still trying to get its bearings as batteries roll off the production line and into Model 3s. And just like on the Tesla side of the Gigafactory, there’s intense pressure to meet production goals and work at breakneck speed.

A Panasonic spokesperson replied to a list of Business Insider’s detailed questions about these issues with the following statement:
Panasonic produces the most advanced electric vehicle battery cells because we pay exceptional attention to quality. Our quality-control protocols are industry standards and include cleanroom environments and laboratory-like working conditions.

The battery cells go through several testing gates before they are released to Tesla, and Tesla separately tests the cells after delivery. We are proud to have helped propel one of the most exciting revolutions in the auto industry.

Tiny little big mistakes
Quickly, here are a few very broad words on how lithium-ion batteries are made.
The inside of the battery is made up of a sheet of a positively charged electrode (anode) and a sheet of a negatively charged electrode (cathode); there is a thin material separating the two. All of that rolled together makes the inside of a battery cell.

Panasonic sends Tesla about 3 million battery cells daily, making this a massive operation that comes with all of what that entails – giant 16-foot-high mixers churning lithium and other chemicals, standard operating procedures meant to keep volatile ingredients clean, and a tracking system to follow materials as they go through the production process.
It’s an expensive operation too. Panasonic makes up the lion’s share of Tesla’s $US18 billion worth of purchase obligations, $US4.8 billion of which is due in 2019, according to Tesla company filings.
The current and former employees told Business Insider that standard operating procedures often go ignored without consequence at the facility.

Tesla’s legal and financial troubles came to a head this week as the company reported weak deliveries and its CEO went to court in Manhattan.

The week epitomized the company’s troubles in 2019, with investors starting to wonder about CEO Elon Musk’s leadership and the company’s cash position.
“This f—ing guy’s crazy,” one investor told Business Insider.

You should forgive yourself if this is the first time you’re hearing that the billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk – with his eyes staring straight ahead, unblinking – went before a judge in Manhattan on Thursday.

Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian is not worried about "robot overlords." Instead, he thinks we should be taking advantage of the technology we have.

He was there flanked by his security guards and three lawyers. The Securities and Exchange Commission was there, represented by three more lawyers. There were journalists and hobbyists and short-sellers in the packed courtroom, all waiting to see whether Judge Alison Nathan would hold Musk in contempt of court.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission had ordered Musk to stop making material statements about his car company, Tesla, on Twitter without approval from an attorney designated by the court. You’ll recall that Musk caused company-wide chaos last August when he tweeted he had “funding secured” to take the company private. He ultimately settled with the SEC, which described this and other tweets as “false and misleading.”

But the SEC says Musk broke the settlement’s rules in February when he tweeted that Tesla would make 500,000 cars in 2019.
It will not.
We know that not only because the company itself has announced lower projections (400,000 at the top) but also because of the other pressing disaster in Tesla land right now – it is not selling enough cars.

The same day Musk sat in the courtroom, Tesla’s stock was falling by about 9%. Hours earlier, on Wednesday night – after two days of hemming and hawing – the company released its first-quarter delivery numbers. They were worse than most analysts had imagined.

Tesla delivered only 63,000 cars, a roughly 31% drop from the quarter before. And most devastatingly, Tesla was hit the hardest on its most lucrative cars, the luxury Model S and Model X, which saw their sales cut in more than half.


Given all of the problems on Musk’s plate, it’s no wonder he seemed relieved when the judge deferred a decision on whether he was in contempt of court and asked his lawyers to meet with the SEC once in the next two weeks to see whether they could carve out a deal.

“Put on your reasonableness pants on,” she said, or she would decide Musk’s fate.
Musk left the courtroom and promptly put out a statement dripping with vindication. “I have great respect for Judge Nathan, and I’m pleased with her decision today,” the statement said. “The tweet in question was true, immaterial to shareholders, and in no way a violation of my agreement with the SEC.” (Nathan had not said any of that.)

It went on: “We have always felt that we should be able to work through any disagreements directly with the SEC, rather than prematurely rushing to court. Today, that is exactly what Judge Nathan instructed.”

In a week of losses, Musk could be forgiven for trying to eke out some kind of a win. Neither of Musk or Tesla’s major struggles – legal or financial – is in any way resolved, and even long investors are starting to worry.

“Yeah I own the stock. It’s not one of my favourite positions. I just think the cars are leaps and bounds above everything else in this field,” said Andrew Left of Citron Research, a man who went from short Tesla to long and loud about it.

“It would be better without Elon,” Left said, adding: “I think this guy is just a big distraction. It kills me. It comes from the top.”
“The communication is terrible,” he said. “This f—ing guy’s crazy.”

The legal issues could get worse, fast. The nightmare scenario in the coming weeks is that the SEC and Musk’s lawyers can’t come to an agreement and Nathan rules him in contempt.

The financial issues could get worse, fast, too. Tesla is expected to release its Q1 balance sheet in the coming weeks, giving investors a clearer picture of the company’s financial position. More bad news could send them running for the hills.

2019 was supposed to be chill at Tesla, not like 2018, when Musk “bet the company” on the success of the Model 3 car and Tesla was “near death” trying to make that happen. That seemed to pay off in the third and fourth quarters, when Tesla achieved profitability in consecutive quarters for the first time.
