Being socialist was a rude word in the US. Bernie Sanders in 2016 ran under the banner of being a socialist. 2019 most Democrats aspire to socialism.

"Democratic socialism" is just spin - a nicer way of saying socialism.

Tell me Sad - why do you want more socialism? I would guarantee that you want it because you feel your slice of the pie is not big enough. (Although you may fool yourself by thinking "I'm being altruistic"). So you are envious of others with more but are not willing to do the work or not smart enough to gain what others have.

The socialist way never works - in the long run - it breaks a fundamental law of cause and effect. You can't get something for nothing or put another way - nothing is achieved without hard work. Now that is being altruistic. Yep - the work ethic - you owe everything you have to it.

But what he's calling for isn't socialism (if we're talking Bernie for example), in fact none of the democratic candidates are talking about socialism, it's just what the people on the right who for some reason think things like Universal Healthcare and a fair minimum wage are bad and want to call it socialism so they don't have to prove to people why those things are bad and can just say "look at Venezuela, it doesn't work!".

Is Australia a Socialist country?

Government-funded Schools and Education, Medical Care, a fair minimum wage and common-sense gun control laws?

Socialism!

The problem is when Americans are polled on the individual topics they actually want them and support them, even Gun control. But the moment they hear Socialism or "socialised health care", they've been programmed to think communism etc and then get turned off by the idea, very deliberately designed so.

It's like when people on the street, Republicans, were asked how they felt about Obamacare and they'd rant on about how bad it was and the death panels etc, then when you ask them about the Affordable Healthcare act, all of a sudden they're raving about it and how that's what America should have instead.

There is "Socialism", Socialism and what the progressives on the left are advocating for, all of which are entirely different things.

It's people like who know there is general support for the individual policies of the left by the country that has to call them things like "socialism" to keep votes away from it, even though it's int he best interest of you and the people (assuming you're American).

Some on the right don't even know they're doing it, totally ignorant and oblivious to what they're doing. And they're usually the most steadfast supporters who will advocate for policies that are detrimental to them and the country as a whole, but think they're being patriotic rather than exploited.

I'm doing ok, I've had help over the years that I'm not ashamed to admit nor foolish enough not to see. I went to a public school, my single mum head a healthcare card that offered me discounted tertiary education rates and then I was qualified for HECS and was able to get my degree which I have paid back in full many years ago. I don't mind my tax dollars going to good causes. If that means for example that children get free dental care, I'm all for that for example.

People like you keep going on about running a country like a business. Show me one business that never spent money to make money, or invested in itself to grow or save money in the long run?

Economics is a difficult concept and while I don't claim to be an expert, I know enough to know that I don't know enough. I value what the experts have to say, something that is sorely lacking in so many leadership structures in the US and even AU.

Frank and honest assessments of what our issues are today and into the future with real-world solutions being put forward isn't what happens in politics anymore, and we need to get back there before it's too late.
