The Police Academy series - yay or nay?

The Police Academy series had its initial success in 1984. Though their initial release brought in over $100 million at the box office, the other movies of the series raised only modest returns. Police Academy: Mission to Moscow only made over $700,000 and was only played domestically in the United States.

I recall watching the movies as a child and in my teenage years, fondly. However, I think much of my love for the movie series was influenced by my father's easily satiable sense of comedy. However, in my 20s and 30s, I rewatched the movie series and found a sense of 1980s humour to be very lacking. Having only finished watching the first four movies, I am willing to part with the movies to give to my father.

Maybe it is the lack of comic timing. Maybe it is the slapstick humour. Or perhaps Steve Guttenberg was so smug and pretentious with his rebellion that we could not relate to him. Something was really off with the comedy.

What are you thoughts on this series. Do we really miss it? Or is the humour so stale that we can do without the series?

Is comedy getting worse?

you'll find the same with many of the old comedies you used to watch, not just Police Academy. Your tastes change as you age.  Sit down with a 15 year old and see what they think of it.

15 years ago, I showed a friend "Spaceballs". My friend, who seemed to miss 1980s movies, laughed her arse off to it.

I'm sure I liked the first movie when it came out, but I certainly don't need to see it again.

I did go back a few times to see the Police Academy Stunt Show at Movie World though.

Do they still have that?  I haven't been to Movie World for 10 years or more.

I did that in 1991. I think they had a guy in the audience who said that he was from Tasmania. The response was "I bet you call yourself a Tasmanian!"

OK fluff movie at the time but the 80's comedy was mostly dated before the decade even ended. Some aspects have survived well, Even today most people know of the Oyster Bar.

Of course, these are far from the funniest films.

But when the feeling of nostalgia for past decades kicks in, these are pretty watchable films.
