Corrections minister Anthony Roberts has suggested Ivan MIlat’s family set up a GoFundMe page to pay for the serial killer’s funeral.
He said the police could determine if Milat had any assets or money in a bank and “he can pay for himself”.
Mr Roberts told 2GB’s Ben Fordham on Wednesday afternoon that if Milat’s family was not going to stump up the cash for the cost of a funeral “they can shut up”.
But he did admit that if Milat was found to be destitute, then the taxpayer would have to pick up the bill for his final farewell.
He said Milat’s ashes could “distributed” somewhere or returned to his family.
A standoff erupted between Milat’s family and Mr Roberts over who should pay for his funeral and burial, with the serial killer’s brother promising “we’re not going to stump up cash”.
In a statement to 2GB’s Ray Hadley on Monday, Mr Roberts said “hell will freeze over before Corrections pays a cent for this man’s funeral.”
“Ivan Milat’s body will remain on ice until the family stumps up cash or can tell police where other bodies are buried,” Mr Roberts said.
But Milat’s brother Bill hit out at Mr Roberts on Tuesday, saying the state government should pay for his funeral and burial as they did for other prisoners who die in custody.
“One way or another, it’s going to cost the taxpayer every day they keep him in the morgue – it’s going to cost them more money than what the $2000 would have (for his funeral and cremation),” he said.
just light a fire and put him on top...if the family want any ashes tell them to bring a box and take what they want...
we owe the family nothing...they are rubbish by the sound of things.....
